Using a HUMAX satellite receiver to watch Italian TV, mainly RAI channels but they often have the message that the channels is scrambled, but all I read is that RAI is free to view?

I understand that the channels are scambelled or withdrawn from satellite because of copyright reasons.

Thanks for the reply, would you happen to know what method they us to scramble the signal? Because when I was in Italy I couldn't get a straight answer. They must be able to watch the channels in Italy so I asked and all they would say is that you need SKY! Which I am sure is not correct.

It is probably what is called 'soft scrambling' where a rights holder (in defiance of European Law) demands that a programme not be broadcast outside the territory, so a SkyItalia subscription card is required to watch, even if no subscription is payable.

Listing for RAI channels can be found RAI TV listings.

Tony Riz - I also have a Technomate 1000, please can you explain in more detail how you managed to get the Rai Channels back! It's driving my Mum mad, not being able to see her porgrammes! Any help will be much appreciated!

RAI 1,2,3 and News have moved to 10992GHz, Vertical, 27500, 2/3. If your receiver can be manually tuned, enter the above parameters and RAI should reappear as before with a good signal, probably at the end of your channel listings. You can then move the new RAI channels to the positions they previously occupied in your channel list. An automatic retune should do it just as well, but you might have to hunt amongst the end of the list of hundreds of channels to find RAI again. If all else fails, a factory reset would do it, but then you would have to re-arrange channels and preference lists.

Primtime estrictions will presumably continue as before. See my previous posting above.

Hi Clara,

Sorry for the late response but I've just seen your post. As I indicated earlier, I'm a bit of a techno-phobe myself and failed in an earlier conducted scan/search. After Briantist advised that a retune should suffice, I tried again and up they came - I'm not exactly certain what I did correctly to make it work the second time around, although I did change more settings.

Anyway, this is what I did:

Go to Installation and then to Auto Navigation:

Search Type - All
Network Search - Off

I then went to Blind Search:

Polarization - All
Scan Mode - Fast

Then onto Advanced Search:

Search Type - All Channels
Network Search - Off

And then pressed Scan.

I could see that plenty of new channels were found so having done that, I went through all of them and - after almost giving up - came across Rai 1,2 & 3 around the 600th or so channel up (out of more than about a 1,000 or so!!). All I did then was move the programmes down to the front of the schedule so they were easier for my mother to find.

Give it a try and I hope you have the same success that I did. Good luck.

I have found all your experiences helpful and I am able to report the re-instatement of Rai one, two and three. A very happy 85 year old italian mum.

However, with my success came a problem. Rai four and five are now scrambled? Any ideas?

Mike: It would appear that RAI 4 and RAI 5 are now encrypted.

Thanks Michael. I did a manual scan and now have the Rai 1,2,3 on the 10992GHz, Vertical, 27500 but unfortunately still have the distortion and intermittent loss of signal on these channels. All the other channels on different frequencies e.g. Rete 4, Canale 5, Italia1 are fine (just as before 25 May). Any thoughts? Could it be a problem with the dish that is only now showing since the frequency changed?
Thanks

RAI - Martin, good to know you have had some success. Hard to diagnose at a distance, but the following possibilities come to mind:-
1. dish slightly out of alignment. Judicious
movement left-right, up-down whilst watching the on-screen signal quality bar would resolve this.
2. 10.992 is nearer the lower end of the spectrum. It is just possible that your LNB
does not perform as well in this frequency range. Compare with other signals in this lower range. If they are all weaker, a new LNB would be in order. It is also possible that the LNB skew is not optimally set - but that is getting a bit technical and less likely to be the issue.
Briantist and others may have further suggestions. Hope you get it all back satisfactorily. RAI 4 and 5 have been encrypted for quite some time. You would need a Tiva receiver registered to a bona-fide address in Italy to get one.

Got an EchoStar DSB-780 FTA and can't get RAI 1-3. Done a factory reset but that hasn't brought up the channels. Tried to set the frequency on 10992 but only ones available are 10957 and 11034. Hope you can help. Thanks

RAI - THE BAD NEWS: As of 29 May, more of RAI 1 and 2 IS encrypted than before. RAI 3 and RAI News remain free-to-air. If you receive 3 and N, re-tune in all channels on this transponder, including encrypted, and check from time to time to see how much of RAI 1 and 2 are still free-to-view. Probably the less exciting programmes... The only way to get all programming would be to use a bona-fide address in Italy to obtain and register a Tiva set-top box. There may be companies in the UK that "facilitate" this, but be wary. An internet search of "tiva" will produce more information.
