Richard Nickinson: Stockland Hill has transmitted HD signals since April 2010. This multiplex is at full power.

Please see What does "Full HD Ready" actually mean? | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice . If you're sure you have Freeview HD equipment, see Single Frequency Interference if all the other multiplexes are working reliably.

I have just bought an HDTV tuner for my computer. However, I am not receiving any HD channels. I have tried manually tuning channel 31, but that didn't work. I am getting 98% - 100% signal on all the other Freeview channels.
My aerial is pointing due west at the strongest signal source, which I take to be the Crystal Palace transmitter. I am in Bracknell, Berks. I understand that HD broadcasts are currently being broadcast.
I just wondered whether anyone has any other suggestions for me to try, before I finally explode from frustration.
Many thanks.

Lang: Are you sure you have a DVB-T2 tuner, and not just a DVB-T tuner with MPEG4 decoder software?

Briantist,

What is the difference? I have an AVerTV Volar HD tuner. This whole thing is turning into a nightmare. I originally bought a Samsung T260HD monitor, which claimed to have an incorporated HD tuner. Now it's beginning to seem this is not the case. So I bought the AVerTV tuner to check that I was really receiving HD signals.

The tuner says on the box 'HDTV H.264/MPEG-2 Live TV' and also 'The latest AVerTV 6 [...] by supporting up to 1080i high definition TV viewing [...] offers users to watch and record HDTV programs with H.264 and MPEG-2 formats.'

Lang: H.264 and MPEG-2 describe how the picture is compressed to reduce bitrate. The DVB-T and DVB-T2 standards describe how to carry the data making up the picture and audio over the air.

DVB-T2 is a revised version of the DVB-T standard, using a greater number of carriers (32K rather than 2K/8K), a larger number of amplitude levels and phase offsets (256 rather than 16 or 64) and different error-correction algorithms that waste fewer bits.

DVB-T2 was finalized in late 2009, after the T260HD had already been on sale for a year. Using it allows the broadcasters to squeeze four HD channels into one 8 MHz radio channel, where France - which uses MPEG-4 with DVB-T - only manage to fit three (and those three at a lower bit rate than Freeview HD).

In addition, for copy protection, the EPG data on Freeview HD is compressed/encoded with proprietary encoding tables which are only available from the Digital TV Group upon signing up to their copy-protection scheme.

Many thanks to both of you for clearing up a mystery which has been driving me mad for the last couple of months. So I have two HD tuners, neither of which can receive Freeview HD signals.

Before I start to save up for a DVB-T2 tuner, could I ask what the quality is like on these channels? Are they badly compressed? I ask, because the idea of getting a dish and FreeSat is beginning to look more and more feasible.

Excellent website.
Just bought a Humax HDFOXT2,updated it with the latest software and followed all of the set up procedures. Alas, no HD channels although SD channels are in place. I live in Derby, DE73 6RB and receive transmissions from Sutton Coldfield. The predictors indicate that HD should have been available since 30th March 2010, but looking through your website, it appears that HD is only presently available from the Lichfield transmitter. This is out of range. We can also receive Waltham in this area, but I understand that HD is not available from this transmitter. Does this mean that I will have to wait for the full DSO of Sutton Coldfield in September? Can anyone explain why the predictors indicate that there shouldn't be a problem? Any help would be gratefully received.

IanC: Yes, you will have to wait. The prediction is if you can get a signal from Lichfield.
