In a move that is unlikely to reduce the cost of upgrading the whole of the nation to digital TV, the Australian Macquire bank has bought up National Grid Wireless, one of the two companies that provide the network of transmitters used for terrestrial television broadcasting.

As Macquire already owns the other company, Arqiva, this move has created an immediate effective monopoly over the provision of terrestrial broadcast.

National Grid Wireless was previously known as Crown Castle UK, but was sold to the National Grid in August 2004. The company was originally the BBCs engineering division, but was privatized in 1997.

Arqiva has belonged to the Macquire bank since 2004, before that is was called NTL Broadcast, being originally the 1990 privatization of the old IBA Engineering division.
