Switchover process - clarification of details

Following some recent comments, I have made improvements to the clarity of the information showing the changes that happen during the digital switchover process.

Following some recent comments, I have made improvements to the
published on UK Free TV

It was apparent from some recent comments that the information that was being displayed about the actual digital switchover process on some pages was somewhat cryptic.

So, I have introduced a small number of changes, as seen on this example:

I have added the word "analogue" to each of the analogue services, and I have removed the strikethrough notation for the channel closure.

I have clarified the digital services by adding in the word "multiplex" for each.

I have also corrected the display of the closing of the Multiplex 1 service on the first digital switchover date, when this is replaced by the BBCA multiplex.

In addition I have enhanced the Freeview HD multiplex details.

I have recently re-tuned my freeview box and all the BBC channels are showing. However ITV, Channel 4 and 5 are not coming up at all. I am in the Hannington area (Basingstoke).

Phil: There have been no changes yet to the the services you listed, but I would have a look at the Freeview signals: too much of a good thing is bad for you | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice page.

Hi there,
After the storm last week we have lost most of our freeview channels.
Those that are still there are down to 8 - 12% which is obviously not good.
There is still analogue service (Whitehawk).
My first thought is that the digital box took a jolt.
Have you heard of this happening?
The Virgin Cable guy said that he'd had to replace a couple of their V Boxes in the area for the same reason.
Regards,
Mike

Hello Philipa, Mikescki, I am located in Bournemouth and I am not receiving MUX 1, 2 and D at the moment.

I am not sure if this is to do with my new (second hand built in free view) TV, the aerial at my new place (I have not own any different as I moved in a couple of days ago) but it would seem that a number of us on here are reporting problems.

I am compensating by receiving them as a near perfect picture quality over the analogue service.

Any thoughts please let me know. Thanks :-)

Ben.

Sorry, I am receiving BBC1, BBC2, ITV, and Channel 4 by near perfect picture quality. I cannot get Channel 5 by analogue. I am not receiving any of the digital freeview channels over analogue :-)

Ben: If your aerial is pointing to the Rowridge transmitter you will not find any (usable) signal for analogue channel Five, the Fawley transmitter which used to transmit channel Five to the Southampton area having been closed already to release the frequency for digital transmissions at Rowridge. The absence of Muxes 1,2 and D suggests interference affecting C32/33/34 or an aerial problem with these frequencies. Check that there are no VCR or Sky box modulators set around C33. Note that Mux1 and Mux2 will change frequency and adopt high power working at switchover, MuxD/ArqB (also SDN and ArqA) changes frequency and increases power on 18th April 2012.

Terry Bailey: First of all, check that your box or TV is not on either of these lists:

http://www.digitaluk.co.u…ment
http://www.digitaluk.co.u…tnit

These lists are not comprehensive, they list boxes known to have problems, but not necessarily every box that has problems.

If not, make sure you do a full retune from scratch - it might be called 'first time installation', 'default setting', 'factory reset', 'full retune', 'virgin mode'. If it prompts that it will delete all channels, say yes. Unfortunately a lot of boxes will not realise that the channels have moved to a new frequency and just won't store them, or if they do, will store them somewhere else in the channel list such as from 800 onwards.

There are even a few boxes that have separate memory for 2K-mode (used before DSO) and 8K-mode (used after) channels, and you have to be sure to clear both to get it to do the right thing.

If you're somewhere to the east of the transmitter, in the sector from north-east to south-east, you may find that the new level for the BBC channels is much higher than you had expected. This is because digital signals were previously (and, for the other channels, still are) heavily restricted to the east. You could have too much signal, if you have a large aerial and/or amplification. You might need to remove any amplifiers or boosters, or even add attenuation to bring levels down. This might mean that you lose the other channels while they're still on the restricted antenna.

The multiplex 2 channels (the group including ITV1, C4, C5 - see above for the full list) will be fully unrestricted on 22 February. You need to retune again on that date. The HD channels will launch on the same date, also unrestricted. The other channels will remain restricted until Crystal Palace switches over on 4 April (the Multiplex C group, including Pick TV and Dave) and 18 April (the remaining channels).

I am in Winchester, and have had only analogue reception of ITV1, and no reception of ITV2 and several other digital channels since 8th Feb. Will these channels return at the next retuning date, or will I be forced to buy some additional equipment to receive them?
