My Sky box has a "no signal message" - what do I do?

My Sky box has a no signal message - what do I do?
published on UK Free TV

If you are getting the message "no signal" this would indicate that there is a problem with the signal from your dish into your box. Even without a card inserted into a Sky Digibox, if there is a signal, you will always get Sky Guide and the free channels.

Try powering off your box, remove the card, check carefully the cables, especially the connection to the dish, reapply the power and then when asked to insert your card you should then be able to see (for example) Sky News on 501 and the BBC News channel on 503.

Once you can see any channel, reinsert your card. This should, after about one minute, give you the channels you expect, such as 103, 104 and 105.

There are three ways you can attempt to reset your box. Please see What can my do when my Sky Digibox says 'No Signal' ?.

If you continue to get "No signal", you dish may have been misaligned, or there may be a fault with the cables and connectors, or a problem with the Digibox. You can see the signal strength by pressing SERVICES, then 4-SYSTEM SETUP and 6-SIGNAL STRENGTH.

When all means have been tried how come there is no telephone number for customers to phone to get help. I live in a block of flats council owned and there is a communal dish on the roof. It would be very helpful if we could phone and see what the matter is.

H Hansen: The building and works department of you local council are the people you should be contacting, as their maintenance department will likely (or might!) have a maintenance contract with the company that installed the dish as well as the distribution equipment associated with it.

Although, have you you as yet checked with any of your neighbours to make sure that the problem you are experiencing is also affecting more than yourself? and is "not" just down to something connected with your equipment.

Sky recivers do not require the use of the internet at all. You do need a telephone connection however with the revceiver connected to that.
You are not clear in telling us what your problem actually is. Are you having problems receiving the programmes broacast by Sky? Is one of your receivers faulty? (If so, are you paying for Multi-room or for two separate subscriptions?)
To post here you clearly have access to the Internet so you can have a Sky Customer Account and can access that having set up the necessary user information and password. Then Sky can help you directly.

rik: If you go into your Sky boxes signal check screen by pressing "services - 4 - 6" (on a standard or Sky+ box) then for satisfactory reception the strength and quality being indicated "has" to be around 60% on both for satisfactory reception, although 75% is really the target figure. If your indications are less than this? then your dish either requires realigning, or alternatively the dish is being partially / intermittently obstructed by such as vegetation (tree leaves etc) .

Other possibilities being, that the coax has not been secured properly where it leaves the "F" connector on the LNB and has developed a partial fracture, or that the dish mounting is slack and allowing the dish to move slightly with every gust of wind.

rik: If this problem "only" happens when its windy then it "has" to be caused by one of the possible reasons previously mentioned, however "if" you can access the dish then unscrew the "F" connector from the LNB and check the it for any signs of corrosion / water contamination etc, although sometimes even removing the connector then reconnecting it again can clear a fault.

This advice is based on the problem "only" occurring when it windy, if though it has happened at any time when it isnt? then further advice can be given as required

Wendy Wasylciw: No signal on what? Freeview, Freesat or a Sky box?, if though its Freeview (via an aerial) then a location is required, this in the form of a post code or one from somewhere nearby such as a shop / Post office, this being required to enable checking of the transmitter that covers your area.
