My Sky box has a no signal message - what do I do?
published on UK Free TV

If you are getting the message "no signal" this would indicate that there is a problem with the signal from your dish into your box. Even without a card inserted into a Sky Digibox, if there is a signal, you will always get Sky Guide and the free channels.

Try powering off your box, remove the card, check carefully the cables, especially the connection to the dish, reapply the power and then when asked to insert your card you should then be able to see (for example) Sky News on 501 and the BBC News channel on 503.

Once you can see any channel, reinsert your card. This should, after about one minute, give you the channels you expect, such as 103, 104 and 105.

There are three ways you can attempt to reset your box. Please see What can my do when my Sky Digibox says 'No Signal' ?.

If you continue to get "No signal", you dish may have been misaligned, or there may be a fault with the cables and connectors, or a problem with the Digibox. You can see the signal strength by pressing SERVICES, then 4-SYSTEM SETUP and 6-SIGNAL STRENGTH.

g. rob: It would have been of assistance to know the model of Sky box you are referring to, but though if you haven't already done so, put the box into standby for about 15 seconds before disconnecting it from the mains supply, leaving it that way for about another 15 seconds or so before reconnecting it again and allowing it to go through the usual delay in reloading the channels.

SKY Box is s/hand. Plugged in etc. error message - 'NO SATELLITE SIGNAL'. BUT, the signal strength at the box is about 80% and quality the same but no picture or channel lists - Any ideas about the causes?

john: It would have been helpful to have known the model of Sky box being referring to, e.g: standard / Sky+ / or Sky+HD, however, if you have an indication of the strength and quality of the signal at a level of around 80% or so then the box must be receiving something, although does the lock indicator indicate "locked" or not?

Should you be referring to a standard box, then remove the card and try the
following procedure.

1: Press Sky followed by: "Services - 4" (opens with picture settings highlighted)

2: Then press: "0 - 1 - select", (opens with Installers menu)

3: On the list of six items that appears select and press on 1 (LNB set up), then press on the RED "reset all settings" button (bottom left under the menu) followed by selecting and pressing on "save new settings".

4: Repeat this procedure on 2 (default transponder)

5: Finally, select and press on 6 (new installation) and allow the box to go through the searching for listings procedure.

If after having carried out this procedure the situation remains the same, then are you sure that the dish you are using was actually aligned to Astra on 28.2 degrees? and "not" for the reception of European stations on 19.2 degrees, easiest way to find out being to try the box out on someone else's dish.

Another possible reason for the problem being that the box has a defective power supply, although boxes that suffer from this problem do not usually indicate any signal level, and of course the indications seen on your box are contradictory to each other.

frank dennis: As the reason for your problem can range from that of a defective box to one connected with your installation, i.e: dish / cables from etc, more information is required with regards to your statement of having tried everything, such as exactly what?

Hi, I'm having problems with the signal on my Sky+ HD box (old Grundig box upstairs is working fine). Get message saying no signal being received. All channels fine for a while after the box is switched off and disconnected. Picture then starts to break up and signal strength and quality for one or both inputs goes to zero. Some channels such as Sky Sports seem to work fine most of the time and if I don't change from them don't have a problem. Others such as BBC or BT Sport break up quickly. When working fine signal strength for Input 1 is 100% with signal quality slightly lower. For Input 2 Signal strength and quality are the same at just under100%, however this plummets when channels are changed. I tried switching the input cables and this worked for a short while but again on some channels input strength and quality dropped. Contacted sky and nothing they suggested helped. I booked an engineer visit but cancelled this after things seemed to improve. I'm reluctant to pay for a visit if I can sort the issue myself and would be grateful for any advice! Thanks
