My Sky box has a "no signal message" - what do I do?

My Sky box has a no signal message - what do I do?
published on UK Free TV

If you are getting the message "no signal" this would indicate that there is a problem with the signal from your dish into your box. Even without a card inserted into a Sky Digibox, if there is a signal, you will always get Sky Guide and the free channels.

Try powering off your box, remove the card, check carefully the cables, especially the connection to the dish, reapply the power and then when asked to insert your card you should then be able to see (for example) Sky News on 501 and the BBC News channel on 503.

Once you can see any channel, reinsert your card. This should, after about one minute, give you the channels you expect, such as 103, 104 and 105.

There are three ways you can attempt to reset your box. Please see What can my do when my Sky Digibox says 'No Signal' ?.

If you continue to get "No signal", you dish may have been misaligned, or there may be a fault with the cables and connectors, or a problem with the Digibox. You can see the signal strength by pressing SERVICES, then 4-SYSTEM SETUP and 6-SIGNAL STRENGTH.

I am unable to get a signal on my TV and the message suggests there is a problem.
I is all very well you explaining what I should do, but these instructions mean nothing to me. Frankly I do not know what to do even with these.

j waters: Its not really possible for anyone to offer advice with such scant information, insomuch that any query involving a "freeview" (not satellite) reception problem "has" to be accompanied by a location, this preferably being in the form of a post code or one from nearby, i,e: a shop / post office, this info being essential to enable access to details on the transmitting station that covers the area you happen to reside in.

It would also be of assistance if the brand / model of the TV being referred to was known.

My skybox set up read 3/4 signal strength and 3/4 strength signal quality but when I go back to the main channel guide it says no signal on the screen. When I move to another dish I have, I get the same strength and the same quality and all the channels are ok

We have over the last few month had no signal times and times again .it is very frustrating it goes of for 3.45 minutes.we find we are more often watching the programme in another room on the TV with an ordinary aerial .shorly somethig can be done .is it because our dish is on the front of our building on the open road .other dishes on our building are all on the back

Marlene grove : All satellite dishes have to be facing in a S/S Easterly direction nomatter where they are mounted, and your dish being mounted on the front of the building should not make any difference, that is provided the dish is not mounted at the same level as a downstairs window facing into a main road of only around 20 feet or so away, as high sided vehicles "might" cause intermittent signal blocking.

Unless this problem has been evident since you started using the satellite system, the more likely reason for the problem is that your dish has moved slightly out of alignment, therefore, go into the boxes signal check screen and observe the levels being indicated over a couple of minutes or so, both strength and quality should be reasonably stable with the former indicated at a minimum of 60%, with the latter (quality) preferably being higher, if though its under, then this is an indication that the dish is out out alignment.

It would have been of assistance to know what model of box you are using, i.e: a standard Sky box, or a Sky+ version.

Every day, I try to watch BBC2 Daily Politics show, more often than not, the programme breaks up and goes off, leaving the message, no satellite signal being received. Even though all other channels are on and working. Why does this happen almost every day.

For the'last, few weeks I've been noticing a loss of use, with no service possible, it came to a head when watching OFAnd H this afternoon, it was always worse when it was windy.
I then had a brainwave, went outside and noticed a tree had grown so tall and bushy over the last few weeks.......I cut it down, problem solved.
It sounds obvious but it could be that simple

Trees growing is a well known phenomenon in the TV reception field. Often problems that appear where none had before could be attributable to tree growth. A careful visual check of the alignment and height in relation to the aerial and transmitter can often reveal the cause.

My HD and some SD services were lost around April/May so I checked the large beech trees next to us. They are in line with the original aerial and now tall and broad enough for this year's growth to be in direct line between the transmitter (Mendip in my case) and my aerial. So I moved the aerial to the other side of the house so it 'looks' past the trees easily. Because of the angles, the trees will need to broaden by more than their current width to cause any further problems, but that is unlikely as they've been there for 35 years according to my neighbours!
Moving the aerial solved the problem immediately.
