My Sky box has a no signal message - what do I do?
published on UK Free TV

If you are getting the message "no signal" this would indicate that there is a problem with the signal from your dish into your box. Even without a card inserted into a Sky Digibox, if there is a signal, you will always get Sky Guide and the free channels.

Try powering off your box, remove the card, check carefully the cables, especially the connection to the dish, reapply the power and then when asked to insert your card you should then be able to see (for example) Sky News on 501 and the BBC News channel on 503.

Once you can see any channel, reinsert your card. This should, after about one minute, give you the channels you expect, such as 103, 104 and 105.

There are three ways you can attempt to reset your box. Please see What can my do when my Sky Digibox says 'No Signal' ?.

If you continue to get "No signal", you dish may have been misaligned, or there may be a fault with the cables and connectors, or a problem with the Digibox. You can see the signal strength by pressing SERVICES, then 4-SYSTEM SETUP and 6-SIGNAL STRENGTH.

Kris butcher: Clarification is required on the following points raised in your posting.

(1) : Are you referring to a Sky box? if not, please state the model number of the device in question.

(2) : If "password" is indeed associated with a Sky box? then the box will still work perfectly OK on all "free to view" channels without a password being required, the only channels that do require a password being those associated with a Sky subscription package.

(3) : When you say "keep getting cut off", is this being said with reference to your "phone" contact with the call centre?

Further advice dependent on reply.

Saturday no Sky sports missed the Stoke v Chelsea game but had other channels bbc itv etc, today no tv at all missed Arsenal v Tottenham a big game to miss, message on top right hand of screen says "there is a technical fault with this channel please try later" this has appeared all day, we have had windy conditions. Dish was connected in May when we moved here fitter moved dish from previous placing as the signal was very bad.

lucille blackman: If your dish is facing into trees or other vegetation located nearby? then this is liable to be the cause of the problem, if though this doesn't apply, then the high winds referred to has possibly moved the dish slightly out of alignment.

Go into the menu of whatever box you are using and select the signal check screen, the strength and quality indicated (if any) having to be around 60% minimum for satisfactory reception, if though the quality indicated is less than the strength, then this points to the dish being slightly out of alignment, something which is usually always in the horizontal (left/right) plane where winds are involved, a slight nudge on the appropriate side of the dish (whilst viewing the signal check screen) usually resolving the problem.

Further advice dependant of feedback.

We ned a post code so we can examione which transmitter you should be using and whether there are any likely disturbances in your area. Without that it is impossible to assist.

Val:

BT Sport is a subscription channel and is not available to non-subscribers or non-BT Internet customers. If you do not use BT Internet as your ISP and do not subscribe to the service you will be told there is no signal.

Hi, I've lost some channels with a 'no signal' message. On checking the signal level it's fine!
I've unplugged from the mains for a minute but it's still the same. Any ideas please?

Mike Webster: Re the "no signal" message referred to, the question being, on what?.

If though a Freeview device is involved, then a post code (or one from nearby) is required in order to access details of the transmitter covering your area.

The above mentioned not required for Freesat or Sky boxes.
