published on UK Free TV

You can use the following ways to connect a set-top box to a TV:

1. SCART on STB to SCART on TV. This provides the best possible connection, with stereo sound and "RGB" highest quality connection;

2. SCART on STB to composite on TV. Older TVs without SCART connections usually have "composite" inputs, usually three "phono" sockets (often red, white and yellow). This offers stereo sound and good picture quality. You will need a special cable from a high-street retailer.

3. UHF ("aerial lead") box to TV. This requires that the STB you choose (all Sky, MOST Freeview) has a UHF output. You will need to "tune" the TV into the box, and you will get OK pictures and only mono sound.

If you are stuck with mono or poor quality sound on the TV, you can still use the SCART output (and the same cable as 2) to a separate amplifier to listen in stereo.

Dawn: You would connect it using an HDMI cable (or SCART if the Virgin box is the older type. Don't use an "aerial connection".

Anne: Two possible explanations. If your aerial is pointing at the Lochwinnoch or Black Hill transmitters, you will only receive a partial service.

You are in a very strong signal area for the Darvel transmitter, so you may have a signal overload.

If you have a booster or amplifier, then remove it.

If you don't, you should try an attenuator (they cost about a fiver) to bring the signal levels down.

jonathan leivers: The Sky feed is an analogue signal, so you will have to switch the TV to analogue to tune it in. If the TV is digital only, the only way of receiving the Sky feed would be to connect equipment which incorporates an analogue tuner (such as a VCR) to the scart socket of the TV, then select AV on the TV to display the output of the VCR.

bob: If you have an 'HD Ready' TV with HDMI connectors, look for a Freeview HD box and connect it with HDMI.

If you have an older TV with only one SCART input, you probably need to put the VCR in the middle of the chain. However, you won't be able to record a different programme from the one you're watching.

It may be best to get a SCART switch box, and a Freeview box with two SCART sockets. You can then plug Freeview and VCR SCART 1 into the switch box and the switch box into the TV, then connect Freeview SCART 2 to VCR SCART 2 so that you can record a separate programme.

Or, get a Freeview+ PVR and do your recordings on that. It's far easier to understand, schedule and allows time-shifting of the channel you're watching as well.

I'm not aware of any Freeview boxes where you can tell it to pass through from one SCART to another.

Wendy: Is the "vhs/dvd player/recorder" one device, two or three?

What sort of Virgin box is it?

Wendy:Hi, it is all three in one. Hope this helps. The old samsung tv that was disconnected to make way for the new one, worked fine. I tried to just replace the same wires and scarts from old TV into the new on. Everything else worked just fine except that machine. Thanks for your help.
