published on UK Free TV

The problem could be one of:

- the aerial has been moved or damaged;

- the cables or connectors that connect the digibox to the aerial are damaged;

- the digibox has broken.

If you have a "spare" digibox you use this to test the aerial connection. Can you still watch analogue TV OK?

Please ignore my post above. Have identified the problem, which only occurs during (and following) heavy rain.

Julie Russell : You havn't given us a postcode, so we have no idea if its a transmitter problem, etc.

However, if you've lost signal, then your likely to have a problem with your aerial, which is what it says at the top of the page...

. Since its two TV's, we can assume its a common feed, and therefore you need to check that feed - could be a broken cable or possibly a dodgy powered booster.

Paulette Church: Its a bit difficult to untangle what the problem might be, but I'm going to make some guesses.

I'm guessing that the DVD recorder is also Sony, which means that you can use either remote (in theory) because when connected, they use Bravia Sync. However, that shouldn't make any difference to using the TV remote with the TV!

I'm wondering if the two have been wired up in an odd way, and the feed to the TV has stopped, but the feed to the DVD continues to work. This might explain why you cant get certain channels - the DVD recorder is almost certainly Freeview, and so you can't get any HD channels. How this could happen is beyond me. The other alternative is that you've managed to change the settings on the TV, so it wont recognise its original remote any more.

Frankly, this is all guesswork. My best suggestion is go back to basics and look at the manual. There should be a setup guide and a wiring diagram, and you should follow that (a modern Sony should also have an onscreen guide), but also have a look at the DVD's manual, which will have a similar wiring diagram.

Check that the aerial goes into the back of the recorder, and then another lead goes into the back of the TV. Switch the TV on, and go to the setup menu, as the manual directs, and treat the TV as though its being setup for the first time. It should find the best transmitter etc (which one, I dont know, since you've supplied no postcode). Use the TV remote. If thats fine, then move onto the DVD recorder, which you should have left in standby. When its switched on, switch on from the button on the machine, and then check that a) you have switched the TV's remote to the DVD as a source, using the source button (you should be using an HDMI only to connect them, if possible), and make sure that you have setup the second remote that it does not interfer with the TV. Bravia sync allows you to do this, but its probably a pain, and possibly the source of the problem.

Then make sure the DVD is working properly, and that you can switch between the TV's tuner, and the DVD. Hopefully, they should work properly. If your stuck, then a postcode and the model numbers of the set and DVD will be a help. A number of us have Sony DVD recorders, so we can possibly help there.

jk: The Craigkelly transmitter is not reported as suffering from any technical problems, therefore this suggests that the problem is caused by something connected with your installation, as five sets are involved then the powered splitter would be the prime suspect, check that the power supply to same has not accidentally switched off, if though it hasnt, try bypassing the device by connecting the downlead from the aerial directly into one of the TV feeds, or if possible, directly into one of the TV's.

I have lost completely a number of channels on freeview and the program guide on freesat just comes up with 'no information available' This problem has been ongoing since the start of this summer - bizarrely the program guide for freeview works just fine - I just have a number of stations missing and the channels I can receive are blocky and pixelated - what is even more strange is that I have an old sky tv box plugged into the freesat and the program guide is fine on that. I have tried a number of times doing a complete reinstall on both the freesat box and the freeview television and the problem remains. There are no 4 g issues in my area ( checked with the gov. website/help ) I am in Swindon Wiltshire. Any help gratefully received.

jk : A further check made on the RT investigation site confirms that seen on DUK's transmitter engineering site, insomuch that no engineering work is taking place and no faults with the transmitter have been reported.

Although you are only located at 9 miles away from Craigkelly, due to the terrain in your area the signal path from the mast reaching your location is at a very low angle, this making it more vulnerable to reacting to slight changes in atmospheric conditions as well as changes to the surface of the terrain, e.g: reflections from wet foliage such as trees, this type of thing manifesting itself more so in cases where the signal level that a TV or box is running at is not that terribly much above the cut off threshold for reception, any slight dips and its under the level, this level varying from brand to brand dependant on the sensitivity of the tuner.

Craigkelly serves large parts of Edinburgh as well as Fife, and I would think that numerous complaints would have been made by viewers in said areas if the transmitter was completely down, but as far as I am aware none have been made.

To check if that said is liable to apply in your case, go into your TV or boxes tuning menu and select manual tune, then enter Ch27 (Craigkelly's BBC1) into the box but pause at this point, (do not press scan) because on most (but not all) equipment if any signal is there, no matter how low, the level will be indicated.

Have you made any enquiries with anyone in your immediate vicinity?
