How to Reset a Sky Digibox when 'No Signal' appears.

Reset method 1 - Delete and Rescan

  1. Turn the power off at the mains socket. Either do this by pulling the plug from the socket, or using a power switch if there is one.

  2. Remove the viewing card from the machine. Using a dry cloth or kitchen roll, clean the gold connector on the reverse of the card. Do not use any cleaning products.

  3. Check cables and connectors are in good order.
  4. Wait for at least 30 seconds.
  5. With the card still out of the machine, plug the Digibox back into the mains.
  6. Ignore all the messages, and wait for around a minute.
  7. Try 101 for BBC One, 102 for BBC Two and 103 for ITV-1.
  8. Insert viewing card, wait a few seconds.
  9. Check 104 for Channel 4 and 105 for five.

Reset Method 2 - Reset the LNB

If the above method does not work, the LNB may have a fault.
  1. Press the [SERVICES] button and then press [4] [0] [1] then [SELECT]

On Sky HD, press the [SERVICES] button and then press [0] [0] [1] then [SELECT]

Press the buttons in the sequence above exactly - do not atttempt to use [UP] or [DOWN]. Note that when you press the second 0 and 1 nothing happens on the screen until you press the final [SELECT]. This is a "hidden menu".

  2. Then press [1] to go to the RF output menu.
  3. Press [DOWN] three times to highlight the line 22Khz Command and then press [RIGHT] to change the value to [OFF].
  4. Press [DOWN] and [SELECT] to select Save New Settings.
  5. Press [SKY].
  6. Again press [SERVICES], [4], [0], [1], [SELECT]; then [1] again for the LNB Menu. (SERVICES 0 0 1 SELECT for Sky HD).
  7. Now press the [RED] button (reset all settings), then [DOWN] until you can select Save New Settings again.
  8. Press [SKY].

Reset Method 3 - Upgrade the system software

If there are still problems:

  1. Turn the Digibox off at the mains again and remove the viewing card.
  2. Whilst holding down the BACKUP key on the Digibox - NOT ON THE REMOTE - turn the mains power on.
  3. Keep hold of BACKUP until the screen displays a "UPGRADING SYSTEM SOFTWARE" message – this will be white text on a black screen. On some boxes this can appear as a half screen.

  4. Wait 10 to 20 minutes for the software to download and install. The box will restart when the process is complete.
  5. Ignore all the messages, and wait for around a minute.
  6. Try 101 for BBC One, 102 for BBC Two and 103 for ITV-1.
  7. Insert viewing card, wait a few seconds.
  8. Check 104 for Channel 4 and 105 for five.

Frank Hodgkiss: A satellite dishes sole purpose is to collect as much of the signal as it can from the transponder (transmitter) located at approximately 22.000 miles away and focus it on to the surface of the LNB mounted on the end of the arm that comes out from the dish, and so anything on the surface of the dish bowl such as snow etc, will interfere the reflective aspect of the dish, hence will either reduce or completely kill reception.

People with larger dishes suffer do not suffer quite so badly during adverse weather conditions because a higher percentage of the signal is being collected.

Rodney Stone: Basically no, as the process involves code breaking, or at least trying to by using a bench full of equipment.

The reason that your card will not work in the other box is because Sky has programmed the serial number of the new box into the viewing card, and if the card is put into another the box it will not be recognised when interrogated by the card reader, hence access remains blocked to the boxes hard drive.

nasim khan: If you are on friendly terms with your neighbour then if would save you a great deal of hassle as far as having to make checks is concerned or carrying out procedures, if you could try your box on their dish, or of course alternatively their box on yours, as that would then give an instant indication as to whether (or not) the problem is being caused by your box or the dish, as it could be either.

I have one of the early Thomson Sky boxes, non HD, which I have just reconnected. No signal. Fault 29. The signal strength and signal quality boxes have nothing in them, and the lock indicator shows "not locked". I have rebooted the software but still nothing. Have checked all connectors and wires (nothing changed) still no signal. Have connected up and old Digitronic box and working OK. Any ideas on resetting sky box? Thank you.

Mel: I would really advise you to carry out any reset on your box as yet until you have checked to ensure that the bowl of your dish is not covered in snow, nor is any seen of the round surface on the LNB that faces into the dish, as error 29 (or 25 some boxes) just indicates that the default transponder signal is not being received.

If the dish is covered in snow and its also within reach, then "carefully" sweep it off with the aid of a long handled brush.

If you have already disconnected the box from the mains and then reconnected it again, you will require to do this again so that it can search for listings after having cleared the snow from the dish.

Mel: The other point to note being, that a large number these early boxes are known to suffer from power supply faults, and so if after having carried out the aforementioned (should it apply anyway) you find that the box is still the same then there is a possibility that the power unit is faulty and with the only way of verifying this being to try the box on someone else's dish, because should it transpire that it works then that can indicate that either the LNB on your dish has developed a fault or that the problem is being caused by water having entered the coax's "F" type connector on the same.

jb38: Many thanks for both your prompt replies. Am using my "cheap" digibox at the moment but that is now only receiving Sky News (perfectly), but nothing else. No snow on the dish but have had torrential rain and have noticed the rubberised cover at the LNB has slipped down from the "F" connector. Will have a look at that in the morning. Thank you.

Mel: Yes, best to check it, this done by first of all unscrewing the gland nut to release the connector from the LNB and then completely unscrewing the body of same from the coax, drying out with a tissue if required followed by smearing a blob of Vaseline inside the threaded area where the cable enters before screwing the body back onto the coax, that is "after" having ensured that all strands of the braiding have been pulled back over the coax's outer cover.
