I live in Poole, Dorset, BH15 3HB and receive all my Freeview channels from the Mendips transmitter. I am having a problem trying to tune in channel 81, Talking Pictures TV. Although 85 miles from this transmitter I have perfect reception all the time, at least, on all the channels I watch including HD channels.
Any advice would be most welcome.

I have the same trouble using Rowridge transmitter. However I now know why - my aerial was installed for vertical polarity as this gave me the strongest signal. Talking Pictures TV is transmitted horizontally so I can't receive it. Another bill awaits me! Perhaps this could be the issue you have Mick. Neil C.

I'm completely unable to access channel 81 despite several recent retunes.

We receive our Freeview channels from the Belmont transmitter. We can actually see it in the distance when lit up at night (about 10 miles away) across open countryside. Reception has always been excellent with a rooftop aerial (upgraded at the big switchover a few years ago).

My husband keeps going on about channel 81 as he receives it without problems on the main TV that he watches that has built in Freeview. I tend to watch on a TV in the dining room/study which has a digibox and it's this one that refuses to let me tune in channel 81. The latest retune showed loads of new channels but just not 81. After Channel 78? there's just a gap in the channel numbers until 120 (CBeebies or something like it)

Jean: Talking pictures is transmitted on Belmonts COM7 which is an HD transmitter, and which is only receivable on TV's or boxes fitted with DVB-T2 tuners. Is 101, 102,103 etc seen on your programme guide? if not, then this would indicate that your box is not capable of receiving HD transmissions.

Neil C et al:

There have been many recent reports of such reception problems, and there have been many reports of atmospheric affects that can cause just the situation you report. So it is quite likely that the well known 'temperature inversion' effect may well be causing your problems. In such a situation do NOT try to retune your equipment as you are likely to lose even more channels.

MikeP, thanks very much for that advice

but

I think jb38 has hit the nail on the head! The channel numbers you mentioned are not listed on my available channels list and I know my equipment can't receive HD channels. I hadn't realised Talking Pictures was a HD transmission. I'll stop trying to tune it in now and save myself a lot of time and frustration. Thanks so much for the advice jb38.

K J Gunnell: Is your TV equiped with an HD tuner? As has been said above, you can't get it without an HD tuner, even though its in SD. After that, it would come down to getting that particular mux, but since your just 13km from Crystal Palace, thats less likely to be a problem.

I have been trying unsuccessfully to receive Talking Pictures through my HD TV tuner.

My aerial is trained on the Stockland Hill transmitter; apparently it doesn't transmit Talking Pictures!
Not all transmitter stations transmit that channel, so that maybe the real reason why some people cannot find it on their channel list.
Luckily I have Freesat, so can watch Talking Pictures via that, though it's not on the Freesat EPG yet.

Apparently you can only get this channel if you have a HD TV AND are receiving a signal from one of the limited transmitters with the HD extra channels e.g. BBC4. Not all Full Freeview transmitters are doing all the HD channels. So much for more channels for everyone!
