Are there any planned engineering works or unexpected transmitter faults on the Ridge Hill (County of Herefordshire, England) mast?

UK Free TV shows the coverage area for a radio transmitter as a coloured overlay (orange for FM, other colours for DAB) on the grey map. We have computed the coverage by combining the terrain with the official radiation pattern. A single click will select the transmitter to view the coverage for a single site, and a double click goes to a page showing full details. Click on the buttons in the right-hand corner of the map to choose from different frequencies (or multiplexes for DAB).

For the last week or so the channel 21multiplexor's output has been flakey on my TV. Looking at the channel 21 signal shows circa 65% strength and most of the time signal quality is 100%. But quality sporadically drops to below 80% - whatever that means.

All the other tuned in channel multiplexors are also circa 65% strength, but their quality stays consistently at 100% - I see no sporadic drops.

I suspect the channel 21 issue is not in my TV or aerial.

Kevin:

I can't find any current reports of issues at the transmitter, either from Freeview or the BBC, and the transmitter hasn't been recently listed for Planned Engineering.
There was some "Tropospheric Ducting" around over the Easter weekend and a few days following which could have disrupted reception of any one multiplex (or possibly several), but none at present.

It's always worth checking that your aerial still looks intact and is still pointing in the correct direction, and that your downlead looks undamaged (especially if it is old), not flapping in the wind.
Also check all your coax plugs, connections, flyleads etc, unplug connectors check for corrosion or other problems and reconnect them. Flyleads are a common problem, try swapping/changing them.
Problematic connections, water ingress etc. can seem to affect reception of just AN individual or several multiplexes.

Have you changed anything in your installation recently, moved any cables?
Make sure that any HDMI leads are not near unscreened/poorly screened flyleads/aerial leads as it can sometimes cause interference.

I live near Bromayrd (Herefordshire) and am not picking up any programmes thro' Channel 21 and those programmes I do pick up (through other Channels) are of poor quality.

Whilst you've posted on the DAB transmitter page rather than the Ridge Hill Freeview one and presumably not read any other advice there, as it so happens, my previous response here is mostly applicable although some is less detailed than on the freeview page.

Although it makes reference to some tropospheric ducting last Easter, unfortunately there is/has been some "temperature inversion/tropospheric ducting around with the current high pressure during the last 24hrs or so.
You don't say how long you've been having the problem, so it's not clear if this may be the cause or just a factor.

To offer more detailed constructive advice, we're going to need a full postcode to look at the predicted reception in you locale as there are many parts of the surrounding area that aren't predicted to get good reception (from Ridge Hill & sometimes from at least 2 possible other transmitters).

I'm afraid as you haven't given a full postcode, we can't say if there are any specific conditions that might affect reception in your locale.
The transmitter has had no reported faults in the last 5 days and it hasn't been listed for Planned Engineering in recent weeks.

Have you checked that your aerial is still pointing in the correct direction (compare to neighbours if need be) as a result of recent high winds and that the downlead is securely fixed and isn't flapping in the wind? How old is the installation?

Check all the connections behind your TV and anywhere else that's accessible.
Have you changed anything recently? Make sure you don't have HDMI leads close to your aerial leads or flyleads as these have been known to generate interference.
If you have an amp/distribution splitter make sure it still has power. Check it's still working - connect the aerial direct to one outlet and see if signal returns.

For the last 2 months our TV picture has become so badly pixalated it is not watchable or the channel is not connecting at all. We even bought a new TV and aerial thinking that was the problem, but we still lose channels completely. Please can you advise. The post code is GL16 8NT. Thanks

Pauline Wagstaff:

You should get good reception in your location, transmitters you might receive have no reported faults that I can find and are not listed for Planned Engineering, so there's a few things to check.

Which region are you/or do you want to receive? Central or West?
What make and model is your aerial, and is it roof mounted or loft mounted?
Was the downlead replaced at the same time as the aerial, with good quality double screened cable such as CT100 or similar?

I assume you haven't had a postcard from restoretv.uk about possible interference from new mobile phone signals and that there's not been any new or upgraded masts installed near you?

It it any particular channels that you've had a problem with and if so, which ones, or is it all of them?

Do you have any other equipment connected such as aerial amplifiers, PVRs, games consoles etc?
If so, have you checked all the flyleads? Also make sure you don't have any HDMI cables close to aerial or flyleads. HDMI has been known to cause interference.

Had you changed anything, including other electrical equipment when the problem started?
Do the problems occur at any particular time of day, or is it constant?

Ross White: You've posted on the Ridge Hill DAB page, but over on the Freeview page there is a warning of engineering work taking place this week. Do not attempt to retune as this will delete all of your correctly tuned channels, but it would be worth checking for any loose or damaged cables or connections behind your TV.
