published on UK Free TV

German TV channels are on the Astra 1 satellites at 19.2E, and are owned by SES Astra of Luxembourg.

UK digital switchover has occurred on satellite - all UK services are digital and are at 28.2E (on Astra 2A, 2B and 2D satellites).

The changeover from analogue terrestrial to Freeview is completely independent of both of these services, and is a decision of the German TV companies.

Reena You'll need a digital satellite receiver - a standard definition one (not freesat) will do and a scart lead to connect it to your TV. You'll also need to get a dish installed pointing at Astra 1 19.2 East - 80cm should work OK in South East England - you may need a bigger one if you live further North or West - check with the installer. Its perfectly legal - most if not all the German terrestrial channels also transmit on satellite so you can receive them all free. You don't say if you are just visiting Germany or going to live there? High definition is more complicated because the German HD broadcasts on satellite are all encrypted. Then you'd need a high definition satellite receiver with the correct conditional access module (CAM) to take the viewing card which needs to be renewed (for a fee) each year but I don't know the details as I haven't bothered (I find the SD broadcasts are quite good). Its something you could maybe find out more about when you're in Germany. You'd also need an HDMI lead to connect the receiver to your TV.

Den: The satellite footprint diagrams for the Astra 1 cluster at 19.2°E show a 60cm dish should be enough. Go to Satellite Fleet - SES ASTRA and click on the satelites in the 19.2°E column.

Any free-to-air receiver will be able to display any channels transmitted free-to-air. See Astra 1H/1KR/1L/1M/2C at 19.2°E - LyngSat for the list. A UK Freesat receiver should do the job, you will need to use the Other Channels feature to tune in the services you want. If equipped with the DiSEqC feature, you can hook up a DiSEqC switch and connect dishes for both the Astra 1 cluster, and the Astra 2 cluster at 28.2°E which carries the UK channels.

If you only want the German, Austrian and Swiss channels, other free-to-air (non-Freesat-branded) receivers are available, or some Freesat receivers have a non-Freesat mode.

R PITCHER: You should have installed a "generic" digital satellite receiver at some point in the last decade or so...

German on satellite - any standard digital satellite receiver will receive the full range of FTA German digital channels from 19°E. The existing dish, cable and LNB may not need replacing. HD is available FTA on a few channels, others require subscription.

Hi,
Before going any further I must confess to not knowing a great deal about Sat.Tv. My mother in Loughton Essex joined SKY many years ago and had a package to pick up RTL germany.Everything was fine up to a few months ago when she lost RTL.(She had an old Philips receiver as well as the SKY box)We have scanned looking for RTL on numerous occasions but to no avail. We can get RTL2 and some other foreign channels but not RTL which is the one she watches(or used to watch)Does she need a new box-possibly the old one is analogue .Can you suggest one. Will the dish need changing? Has RTL started to use a new satellite.Help would be appreciated.Thanks.
