A question for Freeview user in Scotland

BBC Parliament used to be carried as a "quarter screen" service on Freeview. Would you prefer the channel to use this type of format whilst BBC Alba is being broadcast and have the ten radio stations back?

BBC Parliament used to be carried as a quarter screen service
published on UK Free TV

Until 13 November 2006, the BBC Parliament channel used to be carried as a quarter screen service on Freeview, because as the BBC said at the time:

"It is felt to be a more efficient use of space to display BBC Parliament within a text format, with the picture a quarter screen, thus enabling the broadcast of other services. This is only possible because the majority of camera shots are of one person talking."

In Scotland, during the hours that BBC Alba is on air, the BBC have removed ten radio stations: Radio 1, Radio 2, Radio 3, Radio 4, 4 Extra, 5 Live Sports Extra, World Service, Asian Network, Radio Scotland and Radio nan Gaidheal.

There have been some questions about the consultation.

One question that was not asked: could BBC Parliament be returned to the "quarter screen plus text" service during the BBC Alba transmission hours, so that the ten radio stations could continue to broadcast?

This is an excellent idea, if it would work - I have no expertise to know whether it would release enough bandwidth so as to allow return of all 10 of the BBC radio services.

The loss to Freeview Scotland of important programmes such as Radio 4's PM and all of Radio 3's jazz output is to be regretted and urgently needs to be rectified.

There is a campaign which can be reached through http://tinyurl.com/freebeebradio which is campaigning to get these radio services fully restored.

I shall pass this suggestion and details of this site on to the campaign.

In terms of efficient use of bandwidth getting the radio stations back is by far the better option.

Yes, without doubt - give me back the radio stations ASAP. BBC ALBA is interesting - sometimes - but I am lucky and can see mountains and lochs from my window, and fiddles and accordions are an acquired, or inherited taste.

If I lived in Scotland I would have to bite the bullet & buy FREESAT.

I wouldn't be able to survive without decent quality BBC Radio 24/7 & the ability to record and edit it using my Toshiba hard drive, as I do with the TV & radio here in England.

BBC ALBA is there as well for those who like it with English subtitles if required.
