Digital switch-over problems

There are now a number of issues related to digital switchover (DSO) in the UK.

The Sutton Coldfield transmitter that serves Birmingham is having all the current analogue and digital services moved to a second temporary mast. This work was due to be completed last month, but the bad weather has not allowed the "air work" to be completed quickly.

With the power level reported to be about an eighth of normal, this has caused many people reception problems in second largest city in England.

Despite being close to the first digital switch-over in Whitehaven, it seems that people using the Bleach Green transmitter are unable to scan for Freeview services. However, they do work if the viewer manually tunes their box toC53, C57 and C60. "Digital UK says they are now working with Ofcom and the broadcasters to fix the problem".

Down in Cornwall, the Redruth transmitter is stuck in limbo. Cornish people can now watch digital TV from the transmitter and relays, but the commerical multiplexes are on the old power levels and old frequencies until 30 September 2009.

It would appear that the 30 September Freeview retune will be an important date nationwide.

Jim: Unless you specifically want to use DVD's then its a Freeview PVR you require, most of them (not all though!) having twin tuners whereby you can record two different programmes at the same time whilst watching another altogether on the TV.

barry: You will need to ask metro digital to provide you with a suitable number of dish links.

My LG32T75 with built in hard drive has retuned all the channels correctly but it no longer pauses, rewinds and refuses to record more than 1 minute of any programme.

Harry Lee: Some equipment gets confused if it finds more than one copy of a channel, or has information stored from before switchover. Try doing a first-time installation/full retune/factory reset.

I'm afraid I can't find an LG TV with that model number, can you check whether there is a longer model number on it anywhere?

Although retuning regularly, and successfully getting the channels I want, my dvd recorder asks me to retune after every switch-on. How can I stop this?

Clive Doody: Nice to see you can resist the temptation and save yourself a major inconvenience! However this should be indicated somewhere within the set up menu under maybe "automatic up-date" warnings or whatever, the actual wording varying depending on what device you are using as no two brands are the same.
