Boxes that do not support both 2k and 8k modes

Some boxes are having problems during switchover supporting both modes at the same times:

  • Sharp TU-R160H
  • Humax 9200T
  • Thomson DTi 1000

The workaround appears to be to add the "8k" channel manually (C62 for Selkirk, for example) and then to do this procedure after switchover is complete: My Freeview box has no EPG, is missing Film4, Channel 4+1, no sound on ITV3 or the channel line up is wrong - ukfree.tv - independent digital television and switchover advice, since 2002

This is on top of the boxes that could not cope with the changes to the Network Information Table (NIT): Daewoo DS608P, Labgear DTT100, Triax DVB 2000T, Portland DP100 and these VCR/STBs: Daewoo SV900, Bush IDVCR01

Mark: If you mean the building contains 8 other such flats, and you share the aerial, the communal aerial system may need adjusting. See PARAS - Professional Aerial Riggers Against The Sharks for thoughts on who to contact.

Keith - YES - but mainly a/b/c.

Are you using S Coldfield? Waltham seems to be the one for you.

Thanks for all the help.

I have seen a booster type thing in the wall upstairs but it's in the brick wall and not something I can really mess about with (would be up to the landlord). Could I buy something to reduce the signal on my Ariel point in my flat/studio?

I was thinking about asking others but I think most use the Internet for TV. And I don't really speak to them that much (they are mostly Polish) and I see lots of TV license letters all the time (I pay mine) so they probably would get nervous me speaking to them lol!

The Ariel is on the roof outside (really high up next to the chimneys) and again I would have to ask my Landlord to adjust it.

I think it is on the Waltham transmitter. I'm just trying to find the exact course of the problem. But I've had a look at the Ariel just looking up outside it all seems fine.

Thanks for help...not having much luck with this.

Mark: You are only one mile away from the local Leicester transmitter and are you sure that your aerial isnt directed towards that?

When looking at the signal strength also note that Mux channel number associated with it, if on your local Leicester transmitter then BBC1 is on Ch25 / ITV1 Ch28, but if Waltham then BBC1 is on Ch61, ITV1 on Ch54.

Another thought I just had, perhaps if I buy a decent indoor Ariel. Now it's at full power the signal. I might have better luck than using the main Ariel. I have quite a big bay window so I could place it well. I guess it could help determine if my box is at fault or not? Thoughts? Recommendation for a indoor Ariel? The only problem would be I'm on ground floor.

Yer I just read that there was a Leicester tower could be to that one. I have no way of telling. JB38, the Sony PlayTV box doesn't really give much info (but I have the latest updates). But I just retuned it again and I now have 104 channels, TV - 67, Radio 24, Other 13. The past few scans I've done it's had like 80.

I'm wondering if that more people are using it in the house it could be causing more signal problems. I'm really tempted to get just an indoor Ariel just for me only.

Mark: If you had reliable digital TV before switchover, try adding an attenuator. However, it could be that the signals reaching whatever amplifiers are between the aerial and your TV are too high for those amplifiers to handle without adding significant distortion.

Feedback into the system from other boxes is very unlikely to affect the system that much. It used to be a bigger problem in the early days of TV, but I don't think there is one now.

Mark: Well, I do realise that the box you are using is very limited in its tuning facilities compared to a normal Freeview one, but if you can receive ITV4 (EPG 24) / or Dave (EPG 11) then its Waltham you are receiving these from, as they are not broadcast from the Leicester transmitter.

That said though, its possible that your box is picking up the main BBC/ITV channels from Leicester, these being lower Mux channel numbers, then the remainder of channels is being filled in from Waltham, which will (in theory!) be much weaker. Of course should you had mentioned the channels that you are having trouble with, then that would have somewhat taken the guess work out of the equation.

On the subject of the aerial, another way to tell if your aerial is set up for Leicester is to look at how its mounted, if its with the elements up and down then that's for Leicester, but if horizontal its Waltham. (This of course entirely dependant on the installer having mounted it correctly!)

Finally, on your initial posting where you mentioned thinking about a new Freeview box, I would without hesitation endorse this as being a good idea!

Yes they are listed on the EPG (Dave and ITV4). I must be getting them from both transmitters! As BBC appears stronger. But also I just got this email back.

"
Thank you for contacting the BBC.

I understand you've encountered problems with your reception recently.

As your area is undergoing the digital switchover and I would suggest you contact Digital UK who are responsible for retuning issues. You can get in touch with them via the following number and or the 'E-mail us' webform on their website:

I guess my antenna is pointing the wrong way!! :(. But I doubt my landlord is ever gonna fix it (she lives in another city). Time to get a indoor Ariel I think...:(
