From Arqiva press office:

NEWS ALERT

Date: 28 September 2011

DSO completed for Oxford transmitter group

The Digital Switch Over process for the Oxford transmitter group, serving Oxfordshire and parts of Berkshire and Buckinghamshire, has been successfully implemented by Arqiva.

The public-service multiplexes are now being transmitted at full power from the main station at Oxford and, for the first time, from its five dependent relays at Ascott under Wychwood, Charlbury, Guiting Power, Icomb Hill and Over Norton.

The 'commercial' multiplexes (Oxford only) do not reach their final DSO powers until April 2012, as planned.

Following the analogue switch-off for BBC Two on 14 September, the remaining analogue signals for BBC One, ITV1, Channel 4 and Channel 5 ceased by 00:01 on Wednesday 28 September. The new digital signals entered official service at Oxford at 06:00, with the last of the relays completed by 12:33.

Continuing on from my posting this morning. I can now only receive Ch59 on my living room TV by having the TV on at the same time in the bedroom. Turn off and I lose the signal to the living room tv or the picture starts to pixelate then breaks up. The other channels are fine even with the bedroom TV turned off.

Any ideas what might be happening?

Thanks.
Suzanne

Suzanne: Hi Suz, sorry not to get back sooner, didn't have a chance yesterday to finish doing any tests, might do so today (was too busy up ladder trying to paint).

Are you still only getting C59 when bedroom TV on? What I guess is happening is that the aerial input to the bedroom TV is a lower impedance when it is on, this means less signal is getting through to the other TV. (Impedance is a technical word for "resistance" to a varying amplitude/polarity voltage/signal (AC) ie. not Direct Current (DC) as from a battery).
Less signal getting through could be reducing any overload.

Have you still got your old splitter and the attenuator? If so (NOT doing any retuning):- with bedroom TV off, try the attenuator on the Living room TV. Describe results.
Also try old splitter instead of attenuator on living room TV - use the input and output that was the better connection, see what the results are, then without changing anything take a small screwdriver and short across the other splitter output from the centre pin to outer of connector, there is no risk of shock (unless there is a lightning strike whilst you are doing it :-o ). This will have the effect of introducing attenuation of different amounts. Tell us what happens.

(Before all the purists rush along and say .. but things won't be matching properly .....it doesn't matter, it all has the effect of introducing attenuation).

Hi Chris: No problem about delay in coming back I do realize and understand you have other things to do..albeit up a ladder painting ;-)

Since I asked'post the question Friday night about the not receiving Ch59 unless the bedroom TV was on, it's been resolved! I think it must have been down to the weather on Friday evening, as I've had no problems whatsoever since then, even with with the TV in the bedroom switched off. In fact good pictures for all channels ( including Ch59) So I think until the commercial multiplexes signal are up to full strength in April 2012 there may be some intermittent problems IF the weather is bad. Where I live it is not built up being in a rural location so wind can really get some speed up around the houses, but less so if in a town I suspect, or wouldn't be noticed quite as much. May be just my " female, girly take on things" but that's how I explain away the problems for Friday night.

Thanks for coming back to me Chris..and hope you manage to get all your painting done.

Ditto rural. Given up on the painting today, high gusts (a bit hairy up a ladder) drizzle, low cloud, damp :(

Hi all,

sorry about my delayed response, I've been away with work again!

I checked with my next door neighbour and he has C59 so I can rule out a signal fault, the fault clearly lies with my box, but is also shared by the tuner in my TV. I've ordered a Serial - USB cable and when that arrives I can update the software in my Sharp box and hope that fixes it.

Does having pigeons sitting on my aerial affect the picture quality do you know?

Many thanks,
Simon

Simon: I hope you manage to update your Sharp box and this fixes the problem, but at least you know that it's not the signal as your next door neighbour has Ch59. It's just a process of elimination sadly, as it was for me too. All so time consuming and frustrating to say the least, but sounds as though you may be getting nearer to solving the problem.

As for pigeons sitting on your aerial affecting the picture quality, from my own experience, regardless of whether a pigeon, sparrow, wind, rain, sleet, snow, sunshine, hailstones, aircraft flying over, everything affects "digital pictures" especially where Ch59 is concerned ;-) Windy where I am today, and even BBC1 is pixelating so I won't even look at Ch59 it will be far too stressful.

Good luck with your Sharp box!

Windows is currently struggling to recognise my Serial-USB cable which would enable me to update my software!

Simon: Which version of Windows are you running?
Did you read this - Updating the DigiHome PVR80 as well as this - http://www.vestelpvr.futa….pdf ?
Both those links are on that download page.
I take it you don't have a serial port, so I hope that all helps and you are able to get it working.

Hello,

It's Suzanne again! Since last night I've lost Dave, Challenge, Really on Ch59, all other channels are fine. Although I did note Saturday even BBC1 and BBC2 were pixelating, but cleared up after a hour. I have not changed any connections, cables, moved the TV or connected anything new to the TV. It was fine until 10.00PM last night, and nothing today. Is there any work going on or anything I need to know about as to why all of a sudden after three weeks of being perfect, should all of a sudden vanish again??

Thank you..and help or advice welcome.
Suzanne
