What connections are used from set top box to TV (such as SCART
published on UK Free TV

You can use the following ways to connect a set-top box to a TV:

1. SCART on STB to SCART on TV. This provides the best possible connection, with stereo sound and "RGB" highest quality connection;

2. SCART on STB to composite on TV. Older TVs without SCART connections usually have "composite" inputs, usually three "phono" sockets (often red, white and yellow). This offers stereo sound and good picture quality. You will need a special cable from a high-street retailer.

3. UHF ("aerial lead") box to TV. This requires that the STB you choose (all Sky, MOST Freeview) has a UHF output. You will need to "tune" the TV into the box, and you will get OK pictures and only mono sound.

If you are stuck with mono or poor quality sound on the TV, you can still use the SCART output (and the same cable as 2) to a separate amplifier to listen in stereo.

viv jones: Is the second TV that does not show the same problem connected to the Sky box via its RF1/2 analogue output link facility? and is the Sky box referred to a normal + box and not an HD version coupled via an HDMI lead into the main Sony TV?

It would also help to know the model number of the Sony plasma TV, its just that SAT1 being seen would suggest that an HDMI lead is involved as the TV wouldn't know what's connected to it if done via a scart lead, which would then suggest the box being at fault as only it knows satellite is involved.

Of course that is unless you have re-named the scart input socket on the TV from standard AV1, as on some you can do this.

viv jones: Many thanks for your Reply, I am not too Technical, so hopefully you will bare with me on my replies.
The Model of the TV is Sony KZ-42TS1E. No Tv is Not HD and obviously has No HDMI Lead attached.
re The TV upstairs, this was linked up by a sky engineer when we moved here 3 years ago...not sure what type of cable was used?
No I have not Renamed any Scart input Sockets, this is exactly how tv was installed 3 years ago by sky engineer when he installed sky plus for us..The problems we are now having only began on Christmas Day.
I have had a Sky engineer out to us and he insists that it is the TV at Fault.....obviously I do not want to invest in a New TV should the fault lie elsewhere?...so i am trying to do all the checks prior to spending out a lot of mOney on a new Set...Thankyou for your Help so far.
Kind Regards
Viv

viv jones: Thanks for the update / explanation. The reason I enquired about how the second TV was connected is because that some installations have a second Sky box positioned in another room which is connected back to another outlet point on the dish, and in this type of situation any problems seen will obviously only show up on one box / TV "if" its due a box fault, and so I wanted to ensure that you were not using that system, because if you were then it would point to a intermittent defect in the Sky box. (near to Sony)

Of course, if you do not have a second Sky box in the house then the No2 TV has to be receiving Sky via a co-ax from the Sky box sited near to your Sony, and likewise should show exactly the same fault condition as seen on the Sony "if" its the box that's causing it.

I had a look at the manual for your set and cannot see anything that could trigger SAT1 being displayed, but what I would like you to try is changing the scart lead from the Sky box over to No2 scart input on your TV, as 1 & 2 have exactly the same status in operation, if anything is used in No2 position then change it to 1, likewise if the Sky box is already in No2 position change it to No1.

You "might" have to press the AV button on the TV's remote control if Sky doesn't come on automatically when taken out of standby, which of course you should do when swapping the scarts over.

Maybe you could give an update once tested.

viv jones: Meant to also say, that if you still see the fault showing when the box is in another scart socket then it points to the box, as the SAT1 seen on the TV could be the box referring to a fault on its No1 dish input, because if you look at the rear of the box you will observe that it has two inputs from the dish and one could be defective, either on the box or the dishes LNB.

The way of verifying which being to unscrew the "F" connector plugs on the rear of the box and swap them over, and if its the box then it will still state SAT1, whereas SAT2 if its the dishes LNB.

p.s.......Forgot to mention that i have ruled out LNB being faulty on the Dish as this was Changed when I called Sky out a Couple of Days ago.
If it turns out to be a faulty Box?....would'nt the fault also show on 2nd TV upstairs?...as both TV's run off the Same Box.

Thanks

Viv Jones

viv jones: In normal circumstances yes it should and it was something I considered, but because the Sky box has twin tuners the modulator "might" be straddling both their outputs if you haven't set the box to record anything, this why the scart swap, then if nothing changes followed by the dish feed swap is really the best way to verify the cause of the problem.

viv jones: Further to the problem you are experiencing, should this fault show up again later on immediately switch the Sky box to standby and observe if SAT1 vanishes, as if it doesn't its the TV at fault, and an obvious test I should really have requested that you try right from the start.

Its just that I was having a check at some technical aspects of your set, and although I didn't see SAT1 as such being listed in the error codes I did notice that the power management board can be problematic in that model, this resulting in various odd symptoms being observed.

Another thing you could also have a check on with your ear near to the set (volume turned off) is whether or not you can hear the internal cooling fan running, as that set seems quite critical to overheating.

robert: What model of Panasonic TV do you have? and are you meaning that you use a Sky box for "free to view" channels?
