Dave Lindsay.
Thanks for your helpful response of 16 April. Will try yet another bout of retuning when next in Clevedon.

Why does the Mendip transmitter and it's relays transmit ITV Wales on ITV1+1. This doesn't make a lot of sense when the majority of users are in the ITV1 West area. Why transmit different stations for ITV1 and ITV1+1??? If you miss the local programmes on ITV1 you can't get them on the +1 channel. Can anything be done about this ---- and soon?

JohnM: There are less ITV1+1 regions due to the cost of creating +1 feeds for all ITV1 regions. For the same reason there are limited ITV1 HD regions and similarly the BBC does not provide regional BBC One HD feeds.

If missing local ITV1 programmes is that much of an issue, then set them on your PVR and you can watch them back at any time. I didn't realise that there was that much local programming left on ITV1....for cost reasons.

JohnM: ITV plc have recently obtained broadcast licences for ITV1+1 West (terrestrial and satellite/cable), so hopefully this indicates they will be launching soon.

Each +1 service requires time-shifting equipment, capacity on satellite, and monitoring to ensure that any content that isn't licensed for timeshifting or can't be timeshifted for legal reasons (for example, the roulette games on The Zone overnight) are blacked out. If something happened in a live event that would cause compliance problems (e.g. a guest swearing) they would want to be able to block that.

The six original +1 regions were chosen to match advertising 'macroregion' boundaries. The limit was six because that's all they could fit on satellite at the time. Now that Astra 1N is in service, there's space for 10, one for all legacy English regions, except for Border which will still get the Granada service. Those regions that still have sub-regional news services, e.g. Meridian South vs Meridian South-East, will still have half the region getting the 'wrong' service.

Ben Ward: I was having a look at your series of back postings concerning your difficulties and have a test that I would like you to try on the Humax (and only!) as the tuners fitted in these devices have more of a consistency in performance and so are best to use for checking / comparing strengths etc.

What I would like to know is what the signal / quality is seen indicated as when on BBC (Ch61) and then ITV (Ch54) when connected to the aerial used by upstairs, and then the same test carried out on the aerial used for downstairs as I believe that you use two different aerials, but make sure that the test is with the aerial connected directly into the Humax and not having been looped through anything.

Maybe you could also indicate the model of Humax that you have, although it would be of assistance to know the actual model numbers of the Toshiba TV as well as the Sony box, as many of these well known brands can have problems with transmission modes etc and so its always of benefit to know what a person is using.
