Hi. I've been lurking on this site for weeks.

We live on the top floor of a block of flats near N5 2NL. We used to have a booster that served as a splitter to two Bush B320DTR boxes, but have now replaced that with a three way splitter as we were suffering bad reception since the end of March.

Now since the 18th we've had problems with a few muxes dropping out altogether on C22, C23, and C28. With retuning, sometimes the channels won't even appear in the list. One retune put the BBC channels on the channel 800 range, another retune put the COM5 mux channels there.

At first, we had gotten all the channels, but the reception seems so sensitive now that entire bands of channels are unwatchable at varying times of the day and is now totally unreliable.

Signal levels are around 70%, but quality is nil, with a black screen as a result. In fact, when trying a manual scan, the missing mux bands initially read as 'very good' before instantly reading as 'none'.

Do we buy an attenuator or an indoor aerial? Our building shares an aerial, so there's no way we can adjust it ourselves. This is very frustrating.

I know this is history, albeit recent, but can anyone explain why all Freeview channels disappeared from my Panasonic DVD recorder the afternoon of 17/4, i.e. the day before switchover ? All attemts to re-tune failed to work, but next morning they were back !!
I live in Surrey.

Sean: A communal aerial system such as that in your building is usually the responsibility of the landlord. So if it found to be faulty, then the organisation or person responsible should have it fixed.

However, based on what you've said, I'm not sure that you have done anything that would tend to suggest that the fault lies with the aerial system.

Would I be right in saying that your flat has one aerial socket (e.g. in the lounge) and you wish to feed a TV in another room from it as well as the lounge TV?

The first thing to try is connecting the TV/box that is adjacent to the aerial socket on the wall directly to it and seeing if the problem clears. If it does, then this would tend to suggest that it is something to do with your internal wiring.

Is the three way splitter a powered one or not?

What sort of reception did you get before switchover? Did you have the splitter connected whilst you had good reception before switchover (if you ever had good reception before switchover)?

Big Mart. I live about 33 kilometers/ 19 miles from Crystal Palace and have had neighbours with over load problems. Mostly due to having massive aerials installed, here in Radlett I can receive stable freeview pictures on a set top aerial pointed out of my window (done as a test) also I've used a pocket tv with a rod outside with no problems., my neighbours with basic contract 8/18 element aerials seem to have no problems.

Tim: Thanks. Radlett cannot be only a mile from me (Colindale), but I am using the distance from the postcode given above and my postcode.

We have a funny aerial system, I understand the aerial is fed from a block of flats opposite under the road and into the houses !!!

If it is only the HD channels that are causing problems then I will not dwell on the 'problem'. The HD stations seem to be okay on the TV, but it is through the Recorder they break up.

Dave,

It would fall under Islington Council's responsibility. We had new aerial sockets installed, though I don't know if they upgraded the rooftop aerial. Though a fair number of neighbours use satellite dishes. Perhaps this affects us?

We do indeed have the digital aerial socket in the living room split between the box in that room and one in the bedroom.

I tried plugging into the wall directly, and I still can't get the C22 or C28 channels. C23 is iffy. One of the signal levels was around 80% with zero quality (black screen). Perhaps the signal is too high?

I don't we have a powered splitter. As I said we did have a splitter-booster, but I hear that overloads the signal and is therefore obsolete in this digital era.

The boxes were bought last September and we had good quality, using the aforementioned splitter-booster, until late March, when we lost reception on most of the channels supposedly because the booster was overloading the increasing digital signal. We replaced that with the three-way splitter, and after it worked fine initially, we now have these unreliable muxes.

So perhaps we need either an attenuator, a powered splitter or an indoor aerial?

David Taylor: Thanks for the update on the situation and pleased to hear that you have now got something that actually works, of course now you have then this is your ideal chance to use your new purchase to test out the Freeview box that been the object of some doubt, so you should couple the box (whilst unpowered) into the scart socket on your new TV and then power up it up (the box), then as soon as you take it out of standby it should automatically change the TV over from its own internal tuner to its scart input socket, if it doesn't auto-switch then just use the AV button on the TV's remote control, once done "if" the output from the box appears to be stable when viewed on the TV (unlike before) then if you wish you could temporarily connect the aerial lead into the box and give it a auto-tune, checking the results, although the test was really more to verify if the box as such is OK or not, considering what was happening when it was coupled into your AK46 without an aerial being connected.

As far as your neighbours aerial is concerned, I know there are a few odd shaped (gimmicky) aerials around, but if your neighbours aerial is a multi-element job then I am afraid they are deluding themselves, (as many do!) as even if a person is in a difficult area for reception then a multi element aerial would certainly not help the situation where a 200Kw transmitter is located at only 11 miles away.

Anyway, give an update when you find time to try the test suggested with the box.

Big Mart. Your right I'm about 8 miles from you,, have you tried having a tidy up of your leads behind your tv as you can get interference between cables sometimes. Separating them as far as possible. It might be worth a try.
