Are there any planned engineering works or unexpected transmitter faults on the Oxford (Oxfordshire, England) mast?

UK Free TV shows the coverage area for a radio transmitter as a coloured overlay (orange for FM, other colours for DAB) on the grey map. We have computed the coverage by combining the terrain with the official radiation pattern. A single click will select the transmitter to view the coverage for a single site, and a double click goes to a page showing full details. Click on the buttons in the right-hand corner of the map to choose from different frequencies (or multiplexes for DAB).

Cannot pick Oxfordshire DAB service up at all on South side of Didcot. In fact recently the national multiplexes have also got worse. I've been with DAB for 10 years now, and despite the hype I've been disappointed with the standard of reception nationwide. Personal DAB sets are next to useless pretty much everywhere when walking around.

Can receive DAB at a room 25 feet from ground level but receive no signal at ground level
Why should 25 feet of height make this differance?

r.coupe: This is what you would normally expect, and the documentation for DAB reception often mentions this.

There are several reasons for this, and these range from reception at ground-level often being indoors, whilst high up the reception could be outdoors.

The VHF-band signals propagate though the air well, but if the signals bounce off objects (buildings for example) they become weaker.

The basic "line of sight" for a radio (frequency) receiver is a function of the height of the transmitter AND the receiver's aerial. And whilst L-o-S isn't required for VHF signals, as they propagate "over the horizon", the L-o-S provides a guide to where reception is possible.

Also, remember that digital transmissions tend to result in all-or-nothing. You have perfect reception of the digital bitsteam, or you have nothing at all. This is called the "digital cliff".

I recently purchased a new car and I believe they might of installed a Connect 2 DAB add on unit, for Vauxhall. Any way it works very well for national radio stations however I was really after Capital and Kiss. I can pick them up at home but not in the car. Any ideas on how to get Capital and Kiss in the Brackley, Banbury area?

Gavin: Try a manual tune on 10B and 10D. Capital is available on a number of local DAB muxes.I am not familiar with the terrain in the Banbury area, but the most likely transmitters at present to offer local DAB to the locality are Oxford and Bow Brickhill, on the frequencies suggested above.

There've been a few drop-outs of the Oxford mux this morning - the signal strength for Gold Oxford dropped from its usual 98% down to around 6% at around 11:00....

Unlike FM, which usually just fades, DAB dr.p-.ut. ar. m.re sud..n.

I have two Panasonic SC-HC30DB Compact Stereo Systems which are some 5 years old and have picked up a full range of DAB stations faultlessly over that time. That's not surprising as I can see the Beckley transmitter from my back bedroom windows. Becoming fed up with Planet Rock's incessant nagging to retune I did just that - what a mistake. I can now only get Absolute Radio! At first this was annoying as I only retuned one unit and it was surprising to note that the second unit worked fine whilst I couldn't get the first unit retuned even when swapping positions which suggests that there is nothing wrong with the antenna. I then had a bit of finger trouble and retuned the second unit so now both of them now only pick up Absolute.
The tuners tell me they're connected to 5DL National and 11A. Presumably this is the new mux? If so why can't I pick up the old stations?

Presumably I'm on the new mux

The Oxfordshire local DAB signal has been intermittent for quite a few days now. Normally it's 'very good', then every so often it drops down to 'low signal' and back to around 30-45% before recovering. It's the same on both my DAB receivers and affects all channels (BBC Oxford, BFBS BrizeNorton, Capital, Heart Oxford, JACK 2, JACKfm and Smooth Oxford).

Actually I'm in Witney, so I don't know why my location is shown as Salisbury!
