The symbol shows the location of the Durris (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) transmitter which serves 180,000 homes. The bright green areas shown where the signal from this transmitter is strong, dark green areas are poorer signals. Those parts shown in yellow may have interference on the same frequency from other masts.

Are there any planned engineering works or unexpected transmitter faults on the Durris (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) mast?

HI Mark,
Thanks for info - had freeview since the it was introduced in 2010 though but have never had any problems with the signal for the channels I have lost - it has always been perfect and clear - same problem with channels in bedrooms as well as just says no signal. Am just assuming they will return!

I experienced very similar symptoms that began early Dec 2012 and prevailed well into 1st quarter 2013. I live in Aberdeenshire AB52.
The symptoms in Dec 2012 (pixilation, intermittent signal, "no signal", etc.) appeared to me to be identical to those that I experienced during switchover i.e. claimed to have been caused by the low strength signals that were being transmitted at that time for technical reasons.
My Dec 2012 problems disappeared some time during Feb/mar 2013 for no apparent reason (at least certainly not due to any changes that I made).

I have raised with my local councillor the problems that I have been intermittently experienced. I am seeking her advice on which part of which government I should be directing a complaint about the very poor standard of service being provided by Freeview to people like me who are on the periphery of the signal area of transmitters (Durris and Gartly Moor are relevant to me). Had I been better informed at switchover, I definitely would have opted for Freesat but am reluctant now to do so because of the expenditure for new antennae, signal boosters etc. that I have incurred.

I suggest that we should all complain to our MP/MSP as relevant and try to elevate awareness of the problems that are being experienced. A nice challenge to present to MPs/MSPs when election time rolls around again?

Jim

Matthew: Freeview is built into the TV, your problem seems to be with your reception. Have a look at the tradeview webpage for your postcode - Durris is the only one listed, but if you look at the terrain, there is a very big thing in the way about 5 miles from you.

If you can't find another transmitter to pick up, then perhaps Freesat is for you!

Matthew: As MikeB says, there is an obstruction and it is Mortlich which is covered in trees.

Perhaps your aerial system has an amplifier in it. Where an amplifier has no electricity supply it will give nothing (or maybe little) out.

Matthew: I have to retune constantly; 'no signal' is almost a channel and now I don't get the usa channels with csi etc. on ......... not sure it's worth the licence fee?

I have just identified a problem here in AB23 causing loss of signal on the BBC A multiplex and also affecting the other multiplexes. The aerial is a Labgear48 element group A and the cable is double screened satellite cable. About two miles from here is the radar station for Aberdeen airport and it sits about 90 degrees off to the side of the aerial. Every few seconds the signal level on BBC A changes from 80% to 0%. The effect on the other multiplexes is much less with the signal dropping to about 70% so this does not cause pixelation.

I suspect the only solution is going to be a Freesat receiver.

Why are there no radio stations via DTV from Durris? Is this policy or do I have to retune or something?

Michael: I'm sure if the were no radio stations from a transmitter such as Durris we'd have heard about it by now - so it's likely to be a problem at your end. Do you have any channels in the 700s? Maybe a separate button or mode for radio?

After doing quite a bit of searching I found just one website which suggested that Aberdeen radar operated at about 1200MHz. I suspect the signal was swamping my booster and I solved the problem by fitting a low pass filter with a cut off above group A, a TETRA filter would probably have done the job.
