It would seem the BBC are going to have five HD channels for many UK homes in plenty of time for Christmas.

Here is the evidence. First, YouView is listing the channels from 7am/7pm on 10 December 2013.

And if you look into space, you can see the channels lined on satellite too.

Remember that for Freeview HD viewers, you need to use the Crystal Palace (London), Belmont (Lincolnshire), Black Hill (Central Scotland), Emley Moor (West and South Yorkshire) and Winter Hill (Greater Manchester) transmitters to get BBC FOUR HD, CBeebies HD and BBC News HD.

UPDATE 9/12/13

The channel numbers are:

Sky HD subscribers will get the HD channels on the "usual" channel numbers: CBBCHD on 613 , CBeebies HD on 614 , BBC Three HD on 115 and BBC Four HD 116. (Virgin will get CBBCHD on 710, CBeebies HD on 711, BBC Three HD on 163, BBC Four HD 164 and BBC News HD 604).

See BBC - Blogs - About the BBC - CBBC HD, CBeebies HD, BBC Three HD, BBC Four HD & BBC News HD launch Tuesday 10 December 2013 for more.

When you say five more do you mean five in total including the current ones?

Dave: Perhaps you are unaware, but the "kids tv" is being broadcast in the time that the BBC's "grown-up" channels are not, BBC 3 and 4 are broadcast from 1900 to 0400, so you have 15 hours of spare HD capacity lying about - why not use it for CBBC?

And Rowridge will come online early next year, apparently.

Michael: Very true.

In addition, given that eyesight and hearing deteriorates with age, you would have thought the people who could appreciate high definition the most are younger viewers.

The BBC is a universal service: high definition should be provided to all viewers, no matter their age: their parents have to pay to watch the TV, so their children should expect world-class programmes with world-class production standards.

A typical BBC con. The children's channels are the same as BBC3 and BBC4, switching between daytime and evening. The benefit of
wonky news feed definition in HD is dubious. Better would have been an additional HD channel offering programmes worthy of HD definition. Oh, and re-training of presenters in correct English usage....BUT we are all greatly comforted to know that our licence fee serves to enhance top-echelon salaries, pay-offs, pensions and benefits in view of these astounding "upgrades"...

michael: How is it a "con"?

The daytime/night-time split happened whilst the channels were BBC CHOICE and BBC KNOWLEDGE.

The BBC News channel has been fully HD since it moved to New Broadcasting House. You've only been able to see it that way when it was being broadcast on BBC One HD or BBC TWO HD. I can certainly see the difference!

The BBC World news channel has been HD for ages too.

BBC Choice - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"BBC Choice also aired children's programmes, initially at weekends and subsequently daily during the daytime; this duty transferred to CBBC Channel and CBeebies in February 2002."

BBC Knowledge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Original programme included a GCSE survival guide based upon the popular BBC series "Bitesize", entitled "Bitesize Etc" and the technology series The Kit, aimed at children and getting them online and embracing digital."
