published on UK Free TV

The problem could be one of:

- the aerial has been moved or damaged;

- the cables or connectors that connect the digibox to the aerial are damaged;

- the digibox has broken.

If you have a "spare" digibox you use this to test the aerial connection. Can you still watch analogue TV OK?

MikeP:
Thanks for your reply. I'm afraid that it's got even worse, though. Latest retune delivers 0 channels! I did receive an e-mail from the landlord's maintenance people, who still say that they are getting complaints from the whole area (they have a lot of properties). She also mentioned some maintenance going on on the 11th, but I can find no reference to this for Rowridge, which I assume is the local transmitter. The aerial points in that direction, anyway.
The reception, even at its best, is not great; the less popular channels often drop out (Pick, Yesterday etc), but BBC & ITV are normally fine. If and when it returns, is there any value to buying a signal booster for my own use?
Cheers.

Mr P Deacon:

There has been well publicised atmospheric effects recently and these are known to cause loss of signal or interruption/disturbance of same. In these circumstances one should not retune else you will lose several or all services.

The phenomenon. known as a temperature inversion, is now moving away as the high pressure areas leave the UK area.

I suggest you try a further retune to try to re-establish services.

scott ashworth: Retunes should never be carried out simply because a picture happens to be breaking up, or indeed has vanished altogether, as all retuning does is to wipe out everything already stored in the tuner, the content of being difficult to recover if the level of the signal being received is on the weak side, i.e: not high enough for the tuner to lock onto.

The signal level received in your particular area possibly being somewhat lower anyway irrespective of any power reduction at Winter Hill, (albeit this makes matters worse) as the terrain indicator shows that the signal from same suffers from three line-of-sight obstructions within 2.5mls of your location, the largest of being approx 1 mile wide @ 0.5 miles from said location, obstructions always having a greater effect on reception the nearer they are to the receiving end of the equation.

The only option you now have of recovering the missing channels is by carrying out frequent retunes, hopefully returning during one of the retunes.

On the subject of Winter Hill. Time factors associated with "possible weak signal" notices are impossible to determine, especially if the work being carried out is connected in any way with the mast, such as the greasing of the guy lines, as it all depends on weather conditions.

Although even if not connected with the mast, the work might involve working "at times" in close proximity to high powered RF equipment, the blanket "weak signal" warning covering any occasion a power reduction might be required.

scott ashworth: Well no, as its all dependant on that said. But though as far as your problem is concerned, have you ascertained if others in your area are also being affected in a similar fashion? as your problem might simply be caused by the strength of the signal received hovering at just above that required for reception, this known as the threshold level, any slight increase in the strength rectifying the problem, albeit partially.

The importance of making enquiries elsewhere is due to the fact that quite a number of the channels used by Winter Hill are in the range with the potential of being affected by 4G transmissions, I am not of course saying that this is involved, but the possibility of still has to be taken into account.

Hi,
Since yesterday our signal in Cheltenham has been really poor. My Panasonic hard disk recorder refused to display anything, my other TV on the same aerial but split in loft, is poor on the bbc channels. I got an old set top box to test the aerial the hard disk is connected to and the bbc channels were unwatchable. I checked the signal strength in the menu and the bbc channels were poor and channel 4, more 4 etc were only average.

Does anybody have any ideas?
Thanks, Dan

Dan: Sounds like your system has a major problem, but some wires are just hanging on enough to give you some muxes, but others are kaput. Since we've just had gales, and your aerial is on the roof, I suspect your calling out someone to take a look.
