As I have posted before the aerial and cables are fine (no problems getting BBC) and the quality is 100% but strength barely makes 50%! Things are less problematic now that the heatwave is over when I frequently got no reception but still ...

A Farlow:

Your signal strength is too low! It needs to be between 60% and 85% for reliable reception. That you get BBC1 satisfactorily does not mean there is no problem with the aerial system. It is well known in the technical side of the trade that corrosion/oxidation of the contacts of any plug or socket in the system can cause frequency selective problems, such as loss of or por reception of some channels whilst others are fine. So please check all your aerial connections. Please could you also give your full post code so that we contributors can see what the expected recpetion conditions are like at your location.

I managed to find (through trustatrader) a fantastic local aerial company who within 24 hours had replaced my aerial and cable for 180. Now have 86% strength. Hoorah!

It's a little confusing as to what is the best Transmitter would be the most suitable for my address. My Postcode is SS7 1JR That is for South Benfleet Essex.
Now as of late last 8 weeks or so I keep getting Picture Break Up and sound problems on my TV. I have had a look at the web site details. I also have been in touch with the Help Line F.View No 100.
Can you please confirm. 1.The best Transmitter would be the Crystal Palace one. Also what Frequency, I think it is 23. Now what seems to be happening is. I have a Digifusion FVRT 145 box that I use to get the Free View programs. It has two tuners so I can watch a program eg. Ch4. and whilst watching that I can record a for example a program on BBC 2. The box also has a facility for me to look at the aerial signal strength. Also there is another function that indicates the ERRORS. So I am using the set up to watch a program and then after while the picture and sound starts to break up. If I go on to the where I can see the signal level and look at the error content I find the Signal level has dropped considerably and the error box is virtually fully red. Thus indicating 100% errors. Also the to selected Frequency has changed from the selected 23 to another frequency. Both originally 23 now for example Rec. 1. has gone to 25 or 21 and I have to use the Freq.+ or Freq.- buttons to reset them back to 23. Can you please send me an email with the possible reasons for the changing Fr. that of course causes the picture and sound to break up.

Terry Argent:

If you look at the Digital UK Coverage Checker results for your location, given at Coverage Checker - Detailed View and shown from the blue box below your post, it suggests that Bluebell Hill might well be a better source. Crystal palace does provide 6 of the multiplexes adequately but not COM7 nor COM8 reliably. However Bluebell Hill provides all 8 multiplexes and it is expected to provide reliable reception. You will need a wideband aerial aimed at the Bluebell Hill transmitter on a bearing of 185 degrees. The 8 multiplexes are on channels 32, 34, 45, 40, 43, 46, 55 and 56.

The London issue of Crystal Palace is that Com 7 & 8 are now right at the opposite end of the old Band A aerial. Basically most of London unless you are sitting on the transmitter now needs a wideband aerial... the elements reduce in size over the length. My issue was that Freeview sneaked that up and if you are not following the press you miss it. This sight is wrong and doesn't reflect the last set of changes.

As I muttered above I found BBC News HD et al disappearing during rain. Given I was moving I left it. Worth noting if Freeview is your only means of reception you can get the aerial upgraded for free, if you have cable or satellite you cant. It was annoying to find the data on this site incorrect but that's where we are and why certain HD channels in London disappear during adverse whether conditions since reception is marginal when the wrong aerial is used. Apparently there is still some debate about the long term future of Freeview.

Terry:

Freeview did not 'sneak' it upon anyone. The changes were announced and details were available well before the changes were made. You need to look at the Digital UK website for details.

Which channels are used is agreed internationally before any changes are made and there are several more due around the UK for many of the more than 1100 transmitters.

If you are having problems with the channels on COM7 and COM8 it appears that you do not have a wideband aerial, which is what is needed these days for most transmitters. If you put your post code into the Digital UK Coverage Checker at Digital UK - Coverage checker you will get a listing of all the available transmitters in your area and the channels they use.

Freeview will be available until at least 2032, according to the current agreement.

We regular contributors to this website have been aware of the data errors for some months but only the site owner can do the updates. He has not been available for several months.

Did sneak up if you have the Freeview message blocked as I did on mky Humax and this website is wrong.

Basically the Government has trashed Freeview by selling the frequencies off. You don't expect to find that the whole of London that uses Freeview needs to change it's aerial to a widebeam one... good for business for installers - trashing otherwise. Now in West Wales there is no COM 7 or COM 8 which is why I waved goodbye to Freeview. It's just a hobbled system.

What are the total number of TV and radio channels broadcast from CP?

Bit academic the total number of channels from CP if they change the required aerial group for London as they did. My band A aerial at 12 miles away didn't pull in COM 7&8 on a wet day. Freeview with the Government's sell off of the spectrum is just wrecked as they enforced users to change aerials. The free upgrade of the aerial only applies if you don't have sat or cable in the house. For alot of London those old band A aerials won't be used or will be used in the kids room.
