Julian: Your losing channels, so logically the problem lies with your system - retuning is pointless, since your just losing the lock on the transmitter that you already had - hence the odd channels that came up after the retune. A postcode would help diagnose the problem, but the reality is that its your system, and that its failing.

Best guess, a loose connection, fraying cable or water getting into the system. Check your connections, and if you have a booster, check that its power supply is working.

Steven Hollands: I'd check the timer etc to make sure that its not automatically going to standby - if its going off at midnight, that sounds like a setup issue.

To be honest, you might have had that machine seven years, and it wasn't a PVR that was well reviewed at the time. It might just be on its way out, because that software hasn't been updated in a long time, in which case Humax or Panasonic are the ones I'd go for.

MikeP: Thats an excellent point - the buffering would really mess things up, if its a really slow line.

The other thing that it could be is old software - apps do get a bit old and stop working properly, plus the settings could be up the spout.

BTW - why so much spam suddenly? There's loads of it.

Trevor Harris: Really?
I checked the bitrates - http://www.astra2sat.com/…tes/ - the BBC seems little different from anybody else, at around 3.2mb - BBC iPlayer Help - General information about HD (High Definition)

Some people on the net argue that Freeview HD is slightly better than Sky in that regard, but even if its true, does it really matter?

Yes, Blu Ray is better (and a bit better than streaming http://www.expertreviews.…ty), but I can't see the average person being totally disappointed at the difference between a film on Freeview HD, Amazon Prime and Blu ray - I was very impressed with the HD versions of 2001 and LA Confidential the BBC showed last year, which would have used the blu ray versions, but broadcast in 1080i.

The problem isn't that people are disappointed with Freeview HD, its that they really havn't got used to watching in HD at all.

Marshall: Your licence fee has nothing to do with how you get your signal - its gives you the right to get one. However, you could try to see if you can resite the dish, so as to avoid the trees.

Emley Moor (Kirklees, England) transmitter

Paul: If you can't find any reported problems at the transmitter, then logically, it must be your system. Check your cables, since a dodgy connection will cause a mux to vanish, and the fact that its been iffy for a while points to a failure.

Bertmay: Check which transmitter the PVR tried to lock onto when recording BBC1 HD. I used to have the problem with my Sony PVR of attempting to record BBC1 from Waltham, but the tuner suddenly deciding to use Talcneston. The tuner got just enough signal to confuse the box, but not enough to actually record anything, and the box would essentially just wait to record.

This was largely cured by killing off the 800 channels which caused the problem, and fitting an attenuator to kill the signal a bit. And Panasonics are known to have sensitive tuners.

Bren: Why do you care what mux things are on - just do a straight retune. Thats exactly what I did, and since I'm on Waltham, I know that it works, including stuff like Forces TV.

Checking your signal strength might be a good idea - if you are missing a mux, that sounds like you've got a problem with your system.

nick horrex: Which channels have been removed from Freeview? If your not getting channels then either your on a Light transmitter or your losing muxes, which is down to problems with your own system.
