As can be seen in the above linked video, all the final Winter Hill frequencies were active but the old BBC A, on Ch50, was missing.

I was struck by the massive s/n on 554MHz, CH31, of 38 dB, but upon loading this in TransEdit and TSReader, I was presented with GARBAGE!

It looked to be a bad signal - full of errors and missing packets.

I recorded a sample of the stream in CrazyScan2, with the intention of analysing it at a later date.

This TS stream crashed the "MPEG-2 TS packet analyser" program.

I finally got a grip on what they were transmitting: random numbers.

In fact a repeating sequence, 8MB in length, of random numbers.

The sequence had been converted into a transport stream by the insertion of sync bytes every 188 bytes.

Transmitting that stream was a good way to crash boxes!

Last time I saw random numbers transmitted was when they tested the new BBC A on Ch32.

In that test, the random numbers were in Null Packets, and therefore ignored by boxes, and thus harmless.

Chris.SE: C29 is normally Haslingden BBC B and 545.833 The Wrekin ch30- BBC B.

C31 was left vacant when com8 moved to C56 - hence the massive s/n - nothing else on that channel here.

I happened upon the tests after reading StevensOnln1's comment regarding Birmingham TV.

My Freeview box has no EPG, is blank on FIVE, ITV3, ITV4, ITV2+1, has no sound o | free and easy

The service tables off The Wrekin BBC B include:

Local Multiplex
ONID.TSID = 233A.800E
690 MHz, uhf 48, 8 MHz, QPSK, 8k, 3/4, 1/32
Target Regions = (GBR.England.West Midlands.Birmingham)
(
LCN SID TYPE SERVICE NAME
007 804E 01 Birmingham TV
048 84C0 01 Sony Channel
050 8500 01 Sony Movies Classic
060 8380 01 Sony Movies +1
094 8540 01 Ideal Extra
207 82C0 01 Tiny Pop
)

The Wrekin is, I think, is the only transmitter I have an unobstructed line of sight to - 100km distant!

When I had no lock on ch30- I went to investigate.

Winter Hill (Bolton, England) transmitter
Sunday 2 August 2020 5:41AM

Chris.SE: The first frame of the video actually shows a scan from 22/07/2020 04:09, when I had lost signal from The Wrekin C30-.

I'm not sure, but they may have moved the Haslingden C29 BBCB to C30, on that occasion, they certainly didn't the next night.

The remainder of the video is from what appears to be a repeat performance on the 23/07/2020 starting at 03:39.

I didn't notice before that C32 is switched off briefly at frame 115, 04:46.

Then, at frame 124, 04:30, the tests on C29 and C31 are switched off.

At frame 132, 04:33, both tests C34 and C35 have been switched off.

ARQA on C49 disappears briefly at frame 311, 05:49

The old BBCA on C50 is back at frame 315, 05:50.

I was puzzled by Birmingham TV on C48 as thought it emanated from Brierley Hill, on C33.

But who can trust what the NIT says these days. According to the NIT, all three petals of the local multiplexes off Winter Hill are still on C56!

James Bevan: Whatever the fault was, or is, it was likely at your end.

Anyway, it's good to know it's working, but I do hate not knowing why.

BTW, this got fixed by replacing the board:
