jd38: Are you saying that my SD channels on the digital recorder are likely to disappear or just the HD ones?

jb38: Just to say that I am away for the weekend so obviously cannot do any tests. Hopefully I will be able to try on Tuesday.

jb38: Been searching around and found an old indoor aerial. Would you believe I used it to connect an old BBC B computer for teletext !!! Plugged that in, and no reception on any channels. I also found an old aerial lead, but it is male / female, whereas I need male / male.

Finally I tried a coat hanger (wire!). No reception on any station. The only thing I haven't tried is a piece of wire (not sure I have any that is not connected to something ... but I am dubious that would work).

I think I should just give up wanting to record off the HD channels and stick to SD. I can view HD with the tv and the recorder off.

Thank you, and others for your help.

jb38: I actually own a house in Portsmouth, which I maybe visiting over the weekend. I usually leave the recorder in London so that it can record programmes if I am out.

If I took the recorder down with me; it would presumably need to be retuned for the local transmitter. Would all the programmes that are saved on the recorder remain, and would any new programmes recorded down there, be viewable without problem in London.

The tv down there doesn't have HD, but I presume that is not a problem.

However with all the setting up there, and re-setting back here, I wonder if it is worth it ?!

jb38: I have been to the other property since switchover, and the television has been done.

However, since posting this, I can think of somebody only a few miles away from me that I could take it to. Although obviously not on the same aerial system, we share the same transmitter! (Don't know if his tv is HD - I doubt it!).

As I look up my street, the neighbours all seem to have Sky dishes. Certainly the ones that I know to talk to have dishes.

jb38: Apologies for not being touch regarding trying my recorder at a friend's house. He has just come out of hospital himself.

Add to that an elderly relative has just been admitted to hospital after a fall.

Life is fun !!

Stephanie Marney: Is there a reason you cannot use the Crystal Palace transmitter? I have both Sony tv and Sony recorder (I live in Colindale), and the only problem I have is that I can't receive the HD channels on the recorder, but the tv it is fine.

Okay, this is the BIG question - what is happening with EastEnders over the Olympics?!! (BBC2 ?).

What is happening on ITV1 ?

I did the switchover today. The tv seems okay. However my Sony Freeview HD recorder has a 'sort of' a problem! Prior to this switchover I could not receive the HD channels through it, the picture would just break up. It wasn't a great hassle I would record off the 'normal' channels. Now, since the changeover the HD channels don't appear on the EPG. Is it worth going through the process again? I presume I am never likely to receive a good HD signal through it.

Update to the above. I did do the rescan again this morning on the recorder (this time after unplugging it - previously I only ran it without the aerial connected). This time it has picked up the HD channels, but they are still completely unwatchable with the picture completely broken up.
