Upgrading from Sky to Freesat | Freesat
Monday 22 August 2022 10:29PM

Chris.SE: Sky+/HD boxes will continue to receive the free to air channels if the subscription is cancelled (viewing cards are only required for a handful of free to view encrypted channels). Sky Q boxes are rented and must be returned to Sky when the subscription ends (with a hefty penalty for non return) so aren't suitable for FTA reception. The Freesat 4K boxes currently on sale are able to work with either the wideband LNBs used with Sky Q boxes or the older LNBs used by Sky+/HD boxes. Older 1st or 2nd generation Freesat boxes (made by Humax, Panasonic, Manhattan and others) will only work with the older LNBs used by Sky+/HD boxes. I've never used any generic FTA satellite receivers so have no idea if there are any out there which are compatible with wideband LNBs.

Upgrading from Sky to Freesat | Freesat

Chris.SE: I don't think there are many, just London Live and any other local TV stations still broadcasting on satellite, the STV HD North and Central East regions (STV Central West HD is FTA) and maybe a +1 channel or 2. I don't think there's anything else of any significance.

Leadley: We need a bit more information, firstly a full postcode so that we can see the predicted signal strength at your location. Have you checked that the aerial cable is connected properly and hasn't come loose or been damaged? It's also worth making sure that the aerial cable isn't tangled up with other cables, as HDMI cables in particular can interfere if they don't have good screening. Did you get the HD channels on your old TV, or any other TVs in the house?

philip greenwood: Nobody has ever refused to broadcast Channel 5, it is a commercial channel and it was always up to the broadcaster to decide which transmitters to broadcast from (provided there was a clear frequency available that wouldn't interfere with transmitters elsewhere, which could have been an issue with the clear sea path to Ireland). As far as I'm away the only Welsh language radio stations with wide FM coverage are BBC Radio Cymru and Capital Cymru, neither of which have changed frequency from any transmitters in recent years that I'm aware of. Perhaps you're referring to a community station which is only intended to cover a small area? Arfon covers an area of low population at fairly low power (2kW compared to multiple 10s or 100s of kW used at most main stations) so the commercial broadcasters are not interested in broadcasting their channels to a low number of potential viewers for little financial return. There isn't anything political about anything you have mentioned that I can see.

Fru Achile: Probably a few million quid by the time you build or rent a studio with cameras and a gallery, pay for crew to run it, then the costs of distribution, broadcast capacity and EPG fees etc. It would be far easier and cheaper to start a YouTube channel, all you need is a camera, computer and internet connection - or you could even record and upload or stream straight from a smartphone.

Samuel Brown : There might be some country music programmes on Sky Arts or BBC Four, but there isn't a currently a dedicated country music channel on Freesat.

Lesley hobbs: Forces TV closed at the end of June as BFBS (the military charity who ran the channel) decided to refocus on their core objective of serving the armed forces, rather than running a general entertainment channel.
