Mark - a '5/6 signal strength' is by far enough signal for your Freeview + box to work correctly. You will not encounter freezes or lockups or anything.
A signal strength that is 1/2/3 out of 6 would not be able to cope but 5/6 is fine.

Gemma - I think your getting a bit confused between Freeview and Sky.
Sky uses a satellite dish and Freeview uses a rooftop aerial.
It doesn't matter about whether your TV's have built in Freeview or not.
If you have a Sky box working downstairs, you can use an aerial extension lead from the RF2 output on the Sky box and run it up to the second TV upstairs. You will not need another Sky box upstairs if you do this, the lead just plugs straight into the RF in socket on the TV. You will need to turn on the RF output on the back of your sky box, you can do so by doing this - How do I change the RF output channel on a Sky Digibox? | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice
Once you have done all this, tune your TV upstairs to the appropriate RF channel and you will be able to view the Television Picture from downstairs. You will not be able to change the Television channel from upstairs though. (OL37EA)

Thanks for your quick response, managed to get BBC and Digital one indoor after all with careful aerial positioning!
One other little problem.
I can receive the North West multiplex from the City Tower in Manchester (or maybe Winter Hill?) with a perfect signal, but i can't seem to be able to receive CE Manchester multiplex even though both multiplexes are beamed out from the same transmitters. Any suggestions?
Help appreciated

Colin- yes you should be able to receive French signals if you connect to an aerial that is working in France.

Gemma - yes, you would need an additional sky box upstairs for this which would connect to the dish outside. I would have thought you would need an installer to do this for you!
Just give Sky a ring and ask them about Sky multiroom and an installer will come out and supply the new Sky box and wire it to the dish for you.

Anytime :)
Another thing to consider, when you do connect your second box upstairs to the dish, you will only be able to receive the free channels and no subscription channels (unless you phone Sky and ask them to upgrade your package). If you only receive the free channels downstairs anyway though, then you won't need to phone Sky.

John Harris:
Also live in Saddleworth,
Most of Saddleworth cannot get good DAB reception. As you said, the Saddleworth Transmitter does not transmit DAB.
The closest DAB transmitters are Holme Moss (on Saddleworth Moor) and the Sunley Building in Manchester city centre.
It is a slight chance you may receive average/varied reception from either of these transmitters ... In that it is likely you will receive poor/average signal quality or missing multiplexes.
I would not recommend buying a DAB digital radio as it could be a waste of money since on the whole you are unlikely to receive a reasonable signal.

In terms of Saddleworth Transmitter (wharmton) and the possibility of future DAB, it is likely to be a good few years if it is ever going to carry the DAB multiplexes.

Don't forget though, you can listen to many digital radio stations online or on digital television.

Hope that helped
