Why on earth do they not include an H265 decoder as well. This can be used with HD and SD as well as UHD.

There are 2 benifits to 4k not mentioned here. Firstly is the increase in frame rates to 50fps progresive which should improve motion. Secondly there is High Dynamic Range (HDR) which increases the range of brightness display. There is also an increase to 10bits per pixel and increased colour resolution. So even small screens will benifit from 4k.

The best pictures are produced by OLED televisions which are much more expensive. However LG has recently announced massive price drops for OLED which makes them competative with LCD.

We also must remember that all TV cameras including 4k have a low pass to reduce the effects of aliasing and moire patterns. So sampled pictures never reach the 1940 resolution. This is why computer generated graphics look so much sharper than pictures from TV cameras.

There is another advantage of 4k and that is for 3D using passive glasses. On HD sets the virtical resolution is halved when viewing in 3D. With a 4K screen the virtical resolution can achieve a 1080 3D picture.

4K blu-rays will be available soon.

@Mikeb

You raise the question of climate change. Firstly to show I am not a crank I have a Physics Degree and an MSc in Solid Sate Physics. I also have passed the CAA Meteorological exam for private pilots.

I certainly do not believe there is sufficient evidence to prove that human activity has a significent effect on global weather. The weather systems are extremely compicated and cannot be predicted even by using the most powerfull super computers.

In the 60's "scientists" were predicting another ice age.

You only have to watch the One Show to see their left wing bias. It also has become an advertising show for TV programs, plays, books, cds and dvds. Guest will only come onto the show if they have something to promote. How do they get away with it.

How exciting even more apawling quality stations. In the age of HD music available in a lossless192kHz/24bit format. The obsolete DAB system is waisting even more of the radio spectrum. Dab listening is still only at 30.9% so a FM switch off still looks along way off. We desperatly need a new system which can deliver HD music.

This is an outrageous proposal. We are already forced to pay for this corrupt organisation
This is one more step towards the state control of the media.

Channel guides should be free to promote what ever they consider worthy of promotion. Personally I find many of the BBC programs offensive in their excessive use of bad language and obsession in promoting gay and lesbian relationships. The BBC already has privileges it does not deserve. All television companies should be treated equally and be allowed to promote their own products.There is how ever an issue with the licence fee which does restrict the income of the BBC.I think this has come about because of the increase of competition. Netflix, Amazon prime, and Sky have been increasing their own original content.

A recent example was Call the Midwife. Many of the programs I don't remember because I delete them from my series link and forget them. It is true that bad language has become prominent in many channels and has been an issue for me in many films. Even one edition of the BBC program New Tricks included the f word completely unexpectedly. More recently there were complaints of bad language on the red nose evening. The 9 o'clock watershed is meaning less in the context of catch up tv.

My main point is the the BBC should not be given any prominence in guides. I don't even understand why the BBC should be given any prominence in listings. Guides should be free to make their own judgement as to which programs to promote. This particularly applies to independent or specialized guides. The BBC is hardly neutral in the programmes it promotes.

This article just states the obvious. No mention of Dolby Atmos which sky is rolling out now. If he considers HD to be a small improvement I think he needs to go to specsavers.
