Hoho so channel 4 is getting in on the act. As I understood the Government were keen to drop the whole concept of a PSB. The whole idea of PSB has now become rediculous. I seem to recall that ITV no longer adheres to its PSB conditions in any case. It again comes down to why should Sky viewers have to pay for what others get free.

I thought there was an annual charge made by Freesat to finance the operation.

As has been said this is not really a reliable indication of the popularity Freeview HD. Most of my childrens friends (in thirties) have Sky or Virgin but most of my friends only have freeview. So it does seem to me that pay tv seems to attract younger people.

Channel 5 HD will launch on Freeview | Blogs

Why did no one else bit? Did everyone else not bother as Five was bound to get it.

According to join freesats latest survey I think most people wanted Film 4 HD more than 5 HD.

Of course the down side of this is a decrease in HD picture quality.

Sounds like they could not agree on price with BBC. Prehaps they are hoping for a better deal when more multiplexes become available.

I know its not a PSB but I think the viewers choice would be for Film 4 HD to take the slot.

Unless the BBC can find someone to take the slot they have a bit of a dilemma.

Not available in HD. Increasing tendancy to show programs already shown on Sky.

Prefer Sky news which is of course in HD. Some of the discusions are deeper than the rather shallow BBC coverage. I thought Sky's coverage in Libia was amazing. The BBC has cut back on its journalists and it certainly shows.

You said in your post that it is the most trusted news broadcaster. The revalations about the missleading reporting in Panarama hardly supports that position.

One thing I don't like about the BBC is their reporting of medical advances. They are always reported as "breakthroughs" which they rarely are. For instance many advances in drugs have very minor improvements.

The other area the BBC is bad at is science. Minor advances again are given "breakthough" treatment often with some meaningless reference to the origin of the universe.

Actually Brianist I would hardly consider that Ofcom sponsered research is impartial. I remember that Ofcom held a public consultation into droping the bitrates on DAB. The result was a massive public support against the proposal so Ofcom did its own "research" which of course came to the opposite conclusion. That's how we ended up which such a awfull system. With any research its important to know who is paying for it.

You paint rather a rosy picture of BBC1. As we now know 61% of BBC programs are repeats. This has been particularly noticable in recent months even in prime time. No HD for local programmes. The news will not go HD till 2013. For me the most worrying sign is the appalling programme they have put in there 5.00 pm slot. Yes "Pointless" and it certainly lives up to its name. It is the most boring and nauseating progamme I have ever watched. Infact the potters wheel the BBC use to transmit was more interesting!

@Conor

The BBC seems to have been very quite about regional variations in HD. We must remember that it took the BBC years to even go widescreen on local programs. It is quite unacceptable to keep having to switch to SD to watch local news. In any case BBC is not planning to make the news in HD till 2013. Thank goodness for Sky News HD.
