Freeview reception at RH16 3SR

For reliable and stable Freeview reception, you need an unobstructed path between the TV aerial on your roof and the digital TV transmitter. The map below shows the transmitters predicted to provide a signal at this location.

You can click on any transmitter symbol to show the coverage area as a green overlay on the map. Double click on a transmitter symbol to go to the transmitter information page.

You can also view the ten closest potential '4G-at-800' mobile phone masts within 1.5km of the selected location - these masts may be used for 4G-at-800 mobile broadband services from 2013-2015.

Jo: A postcode would be a big help, since we'd know which transmitter your using, and see if it had a problem.

You shouldn't have retuned, since the TV cannot find anything, even if your system starts working again, but the first thing to do is to check your aerial system.

If your TV has 'no signal', thats the TV doing its job - its telling your your aerial isn't working. Start with the aerial lead, and work back to the aerial itself if possible. It could be no more than the aerial lead is loose or has fallen out, but if you see nothing wrong, trace the signal as far as you can. Its likely something has broken, moisture is in the cable, etc. Since you say other sockets are not working, that points to the problem being before or at the split (powered splitter failed?).

If your arial is on the roof, and you can't get access, you'll have to call someone out. Remember no 0800 or mobile only numbers, and since you can buy a whole system for a round £150-200, thats a guide as to how much you should pay. If someone says you need a 'digital aerial', then they are talking rubbish, there is no such thing.

Hi jb38 and MikeP,

Just to clarify - and thank you both for trying to help it's really appreciated - since we had the digital aerial installed - about two, three years ago I suppose - we have always received BBC One South Oxford/ITV Meridian/Central and a whole host of channels. The installer said that he would point the aerial in that direction because we would receive more channels which we did with no problems at all. In the meantine we have re-tuned occasionally as advised and continued to receive Oxford.

I have done a manufacturer's reset jb38 and then tried to tune to the Oxford Channels. It says the signal is strong, but then does not store the channels. I also did this after tuning without the aerial in - so effectively picking up nothing and then trying to tune to Oxford, but it just reverts to West Mids. I am now thinking of calling out the company that installed the aerial to see if they can alter things. Can't think that it would be the TV really.

Hello,

Postcode BN10 8LR and TV outdoor aerial directed at Whitehawk Hill transmitter.

Just discovered that I have lost all Freeview HD signals to my Samsung Smart TV.
Signal strength is about 92 and have reset the TV to factory defaults and rescanned. I still get 128 Freeeview channels incl radio - all very good reception, but simply can't get the HD channels back.

For three years now I have received BBC and ITV HD with full clarity - now they've disappeared overnight! But everything else is coming in perfectly, as before..

Is there a problem withe Whitehawk transmitter, as far as you know? Thanks for any help

Bill:

HI Bill,

I recently went to a customers house with the same issue, at first the HD has breakup issues, but then disappeared even though they picked up all the channels on a retune, I found the channels located in the 800's rather than 101, 102 etc, whilst watching the channels they then disappeared again and moved to the correct channels numbers. With a full aerial system test showing everything was working correctly the customer sent the tv back, they now have a new one and all is working well.

just like yours, their tv was a Samsung. one of the better brands at the moment, but with all electronics you can have issues.

Thanks for your response Jamie,

So, just to confirm, you think it might well be a fault with the HD tuner in the TV?

Just to update - have found the HD channels as you said, in the 800's, but in no logical sequence. Will stay tuned in to see what happens :(

Bill: Signal strength is good, but what about the bit error rate for the HD channels vs SD?

Also, when you go to menu > channels > manual store (then digital), what UHF or frequency numbers does it give there?

Fran Shuttlewood: Your problem could simply be down to the level of the signal being received from the Oxford transmitters being too low, the reason for my suspicion on this is due the fact of you being able to see an indication of a signal and yet you are unable to store it, this in most cases being a symptom of a low signal level that's close to the receivers cut off threshold for reception, or that its being caused by a fault in the TV's tuner, which at this stage I very much doubt if it is.

If your TV strength / quality bar is calibrated in percentages, what does it indicate on BBC Oxford? It would also be of assistance if you could provide the model number of the device in question.
