Freeview reception at SA1 1XY

For reliable and stable Freeview reception, you need an unobstructed path between the TV aerial on your roof and the digital TV transmitter. The map below shows the transmitters predicted to provide a signal at this location.

You can click on any transmitter symbol to show the coverage area as a green overlay on the map. Double click on a transmitter symbol to go to the transmitter information page.

You can also view the ten closest potential '4G-at-800' mobile phone masts within 1.5km of the selected location - these masts may be used for 4G-at-800 mobile broadband services from 2013-2015.

Attenuators, Crystal Palace transmitter- Gable end Televes aerial..
Signal from masthead amp loops through DVR to HD TV. . It seems signal is boosted by the DVR as a result of the loop though.

DVR signal strength all channels circa 45%, Quality 100% - Very rarely use HD.

HDTV Signal strength all channels circa 90%+ ,Quality 100% - Sometimes lose channels - Overload??

Can not loop through HD TV to DVR. So attenuator needed between the DVR and HDTV.

What -db size of attenuator should I aim for. Thank you

RDD: What signal strength do you get if you bypass the DVR and connect the aerial feed from the amp directly to the TV? Check the menu on the DVR, there may be an option to reduce the gain from the built in amplifier. Failing that, try a 3dB attenuator such as the one linked below (get a 6dB at the same time in case 3dB isn't enough).

StevensOnln1:
Thanks for the input.
Your suggestion re:-
A) connecting after mast amp direct to HDTV ( i.e. not looping through DVR) results - very little, if any change, to Signal Strength (High 90s%) & Signal Quality. 100% .
B) On reconnecting to the DVR ( loop through), there was only a DVR setting to switch on or off the loop connection to the TV.. No means of adjusting any strength on loop output.

From the above, quite surprised that the signal strength for the various channels reported by the DVR is so much lower , compared to those obtained by the direct connection to the HDTV.

So off to ebay to get an attenuator. Do you think a variable one would be OK, save having to buy two of different -db values. Also as I am going to have to renew the aerial - (latter beginning to fall apart - result copulating pigeons, corrosion etc. ) , a variable attenuator might give greater flexibility??

Thanks again for your help/feedback.

RDD: You could do what I've done, and have for some years - split the feeds from the wall. I originally did it when it turned out that my PVR was much more sensitive than the freeview box, after getting a new aerial.

One of the reps at work (who'd formerly been a TV installer) kindly made up a set for me, but its easy enough yourself.A decent bit of coax out of the wall socket, then a good quality splitter, then two cables off that, one to the PVR and one to the TV. Mine has F-fittings, but whatever works.

Then you can vary the attenuation seperately, and looping through isn't an issue. I got a variable one, but it didn't seem to do much, so I got some from Amazon (the same as these https://www.maplin.co.uk/…59p) which fit into one another, so you can buy perhaps a 3db, a 5db and so on, and put them in series to get the right level.

The trouble with a masthead amp is that you can't just switch it off (my new house has one), but at least you can dampen it down.

MikeB:
Thanks for the suggestion. My concern is that splitting at the wall will lower the signal to the DVR which is already at circa 55% . However this could be due to the tuners of the DVR being less sensitive than the tuner of the HDTV..

However, I will give it a try and see what happens, I think I have enough bits a pieces to rig your suggestion up.
I will let you know. Thanks.

XIAO: Have you checked for any loose or damaged cables or connections behind your TV and set top box?

I've bought a new freeview equipped television but can't get freeview on it.
Can anyone tell me what I have to do? Is there an indoor aerial I could buy for it, that would receive signal from so far away as Wenvoe?
I live in a block of flats, so getting an outside aerial installed on the roof is out of the question.
The television does work because I took it to a friend, who plugged it in and there were no problems.
