Hi,

I live right beneath the Crystal Palace transmitter tower and have recently started using Freeview after having a virgin media box for some years. However I've noticed that when there is the slightest hint of bad weather we lose quite a few freeview channels. I'm guessing that signal is not an issue as I live so close - does anyone have any ideas as to what is causing this? We live in a council tower block and have recently had a communal ariel replacement as part of major building works to the flats. The council have advised that this is working correctly.

Any ideas?

Phil Murfet: Anyone living at close range under a high powered TV mast can experience a range of problems caused by the umbrella effect of being screened from the main beam of the signal, and so the next time this happens remove the aerial connector from the TV or box and replace it with a short length of bell wire or similar (about 4 feet or so) pushed into the aerial socket (the middle cup section) and check the results.

You could even try this at any time for a test.

Mike Batchelor: have a look at the page on 'too strong a signal' - 95% is far too high (75-85% are far better), and a look at your signal quality would probably show it boucing up and down. Since HD channels tend to get effected first, thats why your HD channels are blanking out.

Just follow the instructions on the Freeview signals: too much of a good thing is bad for you | Digital switchover | ukfree.tv - 10 years of independent, free digital TV advice page - attenuators are pretty cheap, although obviously the first step is to switch off/bypass any boosters, etc. (PE12QN)

MikeB Thank you for your reply . I have checked the signal quality and it is bouncing about a little . I am using a signal amp because I share the aerial with another TV which has HD tuner and the HD channels are okay . I will try reducing the signal strength and also try without the amp . I will post the results .

Ihave tried the Sony tv direct with the aerial and the signal strength was 85% still bouncing a little the HD channels were also blanking out as before . I have fitted a tv aerial splitter so I can supply both tv's and the signal strength is 70% the BBC HD channels are okay but ITV HD is still blanking out but not quite as much as previously I think I have exhausted all possibilities with what I have maybe I should look into a new aerial .

Mike Batchelor: Something is not right.

BBC One HD, BBC Two HD, ITV HD and Channel 4 HD are all carried on the same multiplex (same signal) so either whatever is causing your issue happens to come into play when you watch ITV HD, or, for some reason, ITV HD is tuned to another transmitter.

Hi, hope you can help.

We've renewed our basic roof top aerial with a larger 48 element aerial so the flat below can share the drop via an U powered splitter. We previously had good reception for all channels, except film 4 would occasionally pixelate slightly in high winds / rain. With the new aerial all channels are ok except film 4 and ITV 4 which are far more prone to pixelation or complete loss of picture / sound, especially in cloudy weather like today (yesterday had blue skys and full picture!)
Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks

Info below:
Postcode N1 4PN
Aerial fitted: SLx Digital aerial CAI std 2 (from toolstation)
Direction:pointed directly via line of sight to Crystal Palace
Film 4 tuning channel: 28
Strength ranges from 10-45%, yesterday: steady 50%
