Chris.SE: Hi, the aerial is a short flat 8 bar (aluminium?). This connected to a signal booster gives decent reception in good weather but started to break a up in the rain and wind over the weekend. However the old longer 16 bar aerial on a pole in the loft was even worse.

Do I need to update the aerial to something like a 26/48 element that states its designed for freeview and HD? It would need to be loft mounted and without power.

Mary Ward:

The signal doesn't come from ourselves, but that aside Seagry Court is a relay transmitter in north Swindon. Is it all channels that you are losing signal or just some, if so which ones? Clearly there's some issue if you keep losing signal, I don't know how much of your system in the flats was checked out, but to look at predicted reception for your location we need the full postcode.

Sorry, I missed it before I posted, I also meant to ask how long has this been happening? And, the Seagry Court transmitter is currently listed for Planned Engineering with "Possible service interruptions".

Neil:

All UHF TV aerials are "designed" for Freeview and HD. It doesn't matter if it's analogue or digital, the signals are all Radio Frequency (RF). Those sort of terms "designed for Freeview and HD" etc are nothing more than advertising gimmicks usually used by people that don't properly understand what they are selling and want your to buy a particular aerial.
We need to discover what is going on before you rush off to spend money as it doesn't sound right that this "16 bar" is giving a worse signal unless it's a different type of aerial, so stick with it a bit. It could be faulty for some reason.

Does this bigger aerial look identical to the smaller one just longer? Do either of them have a "reflector" on the back - a larger metal plate/grid?
Your description of the smaller aerial makes it sound like a log periodic.
Do the aerials look something like these -

That's not a hint or suggestion to buy any of them!

Your predicted reception is excellent. Are your signals back?
It seems to be up and running with pretty much normal signal levels on all multiplexes. I can't find any fault reports listed at present.
