Penicuik

I know the answer to this question is above, but I'd like to confirm before buying a Freeview HD box. Do we really get HS channels on the Penicuik transmitter ?

Many thanks

Alan Murray: Yes, Freeview HD is operated by the Public Service Broadcasters and is therefore available from all transmitters.

It is the Commercial services that don't have as good a coverage, as you already know and this is because they have no "Public Service" obligation.

Following engineering work on 5 sept my freeview box has gone U/S and the tv only works with a different box Question has the Penicuik transmiter changed in someway ie stronger signal more output that would blow the box like blowing a fuse///?Hope this is not a daft question but cannot think of any other way to put it

jim: Nothing done at a transmitter can damage anyone's box and so your problem has to have an element of the coincidental attached to it.

However a better assessment of your situation cannot be made without knowledge of your location (post code or one from nearby) as this would then enable the signal levels expected in your area to be assessed, as if the signal level received by a box is running at either the top or bottom end of its operating range then even very slight changes in signal strength can cause its tuner to cut out, and so it would also be of assistance to know the model of Freeview box that is being referred to as tuner sensitivities vary between brands.

Jim: If you can access the menu system then I suggest that you carry out another auto-tune, if however you cannot get into the menu then unplug the box from the mains supply for a few minutes before reconnecting again and then (hopefully!) carry out the auto-tune.

Should though the disconnecting from the mains supply procedure not have made any difference to the situation then the box has developed a fault, and so you should contact the suppliers.

By the way you are indicated as being approx 2 miles away from the Penicuik transmitter.

Jim: Also meant to add, that if you are using any form of booster then try a test by-passing it, or alternatively another retune with a short piece or wire (about 2 or 3 feet long) connected into the boxes aerial socket rather than using the normal aerial.
