I live in Bartley Green area in Birmingham Midlands. My house backs on to Bartley Woods which as large trees close to my property. When I first moved into the property 3yrs ago I had a new aeriel fitted but the was not good so I had to have tv supplied by Virgin. Do you know if things have improved wise to pick up better through a wooded area.My post code is B32 3PZ

KEVIN THOMAS: when you moved into your present property 3 years ago, the strength from all transmitters transmitting the new format were on low power due to having to run along side the old bbc1, bbc2, itv and channel4. It was not until September 21st 2011, that the full power digital took place. I assume, that you switched to virgin before this event happened? you say that you house backs onto the Bartley Woods. if so, is your top pointing through or in the direction of the woods? And is the antenna directors horizontal or vertical polarisation? If they are horizontal, then the antenna is pointed to .However, from what I can see, the woods are blocking your view somewhat, so I would suggest re-aligning the antenna to point towards instead vertical polarisation. You can receive all the Freeview channels from this transmitter. Brierley Hill mast is 5 miles from you at 292 degrees. It's a group C/D antenna required. If this does not resolve your issues, then I'd suggest you stick with virgin cable. There are some areas where reception via roof top antenna is not possible due to both geographical and technical reasons.

Re: box 'magic eye'.
Assuming the 'magic eye is not faulty or failed then it is not uncommon for the light on the small box connected to the IR 'magic eye' device to be illuminated and for the eye not to function.
This is because the Sky box has got IR function in a loop.
Go into the settings of the Sky box and turn off the RF2 .
Then go and turn it back on (don't forget to click the change setting 'button' each time).
This will reset the IR logic and the 'eye' should now work.

Carol: Frankly, my ones on the way out, so if your close to North Cambridgeshire....

Seriously, they cost about £20 or less new, and most people now have TV's with Freeview or included (in fact I'm amazed they still get people to buy TV's with just Freeview in them - an HD panel should really have an HD tuner), so its only older TV's without a tuner (or one thats stopped working) that really need them.

My best advice is to keep it for the moment. Always useful if someones box does pack up, and you can add it to an older TV, VCR or even a PC with a (to make into a recorder). Just box it up and stick it in the . At some point it might go to the tip, but at present, it just might come in handy.

Thanks for your reply Mike. I think I'll contact some charities to see if they're interested. They did take away my old TV so you never know. I'm not good at keeping things I don't need. Failing that, it could be Currys!

richard: It's transmitted at a woeful 24kW along with 8 other on channel 31, it could be your or cabling if you are problems receiving it, get it checked out. Old aerials or knackered cables can often make all the difference between getting it, or poorly, or even not at all.
