Gareth Jones: Well now that you have confirmed that you do indeed use a communal aerial system then this is something which somewhat limits the scope of what you can try, excepting of course the wire aerial test! but when taking this into account then about the only thing left that you can possibly do is to find out if any of your neighbours that you might be on good terms with happens to use a small TV in their bedroom that they would be willing to let you borrow for ten minutes or so for the purpose of trying it out on your apartments aerial points, you of course not requiring to do anything more than just plug it in and connect the aerial lead on to it, as the TV will already have all the channels pre-stored.
Should you be successful in managing to borrow a set then this would be an absolute boon as it would instantly point to the source of the problem, because if an engineer was called in to check out your system then the aerial points provided in the flat would be the very first thing that he / she (to be PC) would connect their signal strength meter onto, and if they were proven to be defective then it would save you a wasted visit to Richer sounds, because when dealing with communal aerial systems the possibly always exists that the coax line from the communal aerials distribution amplifier into your flat is defective, and there is no way of knowing whether it is or not except by testing it out using another receiver.
I should of course really have sussed out earlier on about the possibility of your aerial being communal, but by you having mentioned that it was on the roof somewhat swayed me into thinking it was yours.
Maybe you could give an update on how you get on, as I would be interested to know.

Nicola: The re-tune on the 23rd January 2013 affecting viewers to Wenvoe followed a change of frequency for ArqB, which carries Film4, ITV4, 4Music etc. If other channels which were working correctly prior to this date are now giving problems first check that the receiver has stored channels for the transmitter that the aerial is pointing to. Check the frequency for BBC1, ITV, ITV3, Sky News and ITV4 also noting the signal strength and quality if your tuner offers this information which is often found by pressing "display" or similar info button. For Wenvoe you should see 41, 44, 42, 45 and 39 respectively. Ridge Hill or Mendip are possible "wrong" transmitters that might have been found when scanning for channels. In the event that the wrong frequencies are stored you will need to do a factory reset to clear the memory of old data, then do a manual tune on the Wenvoe frequencies. Alternatively, do a scan for channels with the aerial plugged in for the Wenvoe frequencies (middle third of the scan), but unplugged for the unwanted transmitters.

JB38: Apologies for not responding sooner. My problem ended up being solved surprisingly easily. Given that my cable was labelled 'RF cable' I connected it to the port labelled 'RF' on the wall behind my TV, which resulted in all the issues I have already described. I did try putting a female adaptor on the end of the RF cable so that it would connect to the port labelled 'TV', but this made no difference. However, when someone came round my flat to help, we repeated this step and the TV has been working perfectly ever since!
Thanks for all your assistance. At least if anyone ever has similar problems again they will be able to read this page first.

Gareth Jones: Many thanks for your update, as on looking back at some of the previous postings I have been involved with I did wonder what the outcome would be of your tests, which of course judging by what you have now reported still leaves an element of doubt as to the exact cause of your difficulty.
However, the main thing is that you are now operational and that's all that really matters.

Hi, I'm going to have my chimney stack taken down and I therefore need to re site my tv aerial. I have had an issue lately with a 'weak' signal from the Wenvoe transmitter my aerial is pointed to......my question is what type or group aerial do I require if the new position of my aerial is from a 10ft pole attached to the highest part of the rear (wall) of my house (aerial still pointing towards Wenvoe)?

Hello. Please help. I have recently moved to Caerphilly area CF83 1DH. I have aerial on roof and am connected to Mynydd Machen. However I am missing out on the other multiplexes that offer Dave, Film4 etc.. and so would like to connect to Wenvoe transmitter. Can anyone tell me how to do this (I am a real beginner) and also if its even actually possible in my location as Caerphilly mountain (hill) may be in the way? Thanks very much. Alex Theo

Alex Theo: One thing you may have to contend with is the Van Terrace transmitter being co-channel (same frequencies) with Wenvoe's COMs. There may be too much interference, or there may be some object that helps block the unwanted signals. That said, Van Terrace is vertically polarised and Wenvoe is horizontally polarised.
The COM channels are those that you don't get from Mynydd Machen.
Have any of your neighbours got Wenvoe aerials? Remember that the fact that they have does not necessarily mean that they can receive all channels (because either the COMs are too weak and/or Van Terrace is being picked up too much).
I'm not sure I can add anything further as I'm not a professional. It's just something to be mindful of. There appears to be no other full-service transmitter that you may be able to pick-up from.

Dave Lindsay: Thanks for your rapid response. How do I go about stopping any signals from van terrace? However like you said, it may not be an issue as it is vertical?
Regarding neighbouts, my mother (who is not exactly a neighbour but only lives 1 mile away) does pick up OK from Wenvoe but it could well be that she is not as close to the mountain as I am. If this is the case are there any other ways around this?
Also, I notice further up on this feed you replied to somebody from Bedwas on 11 Sept and you suggested he connect to Mendip. Would this be possible for me? I am only 2 miles from bedwas with no hills/mountains in between. He then replied to you saying he connected OK and so maybe it could work for me? How do I go about trying to connect to Mendip? Also you mentioned a duplexer. Since, unlike him, I am able to connect to Mynedd Machen maybe a duplexer would work for me and I could receive Welsh COMS from Mahcen and PCB's from Mendip?
