DS: I was reading your posting and just out of curiosity was wondering that when you mention you are getting good reception on the BBC channels but less so on others, are you purely referring to transmissions from Whitby?

I live in sheltered accommodation in Whitby and receive TV through a recently installed aerial supplying a number of properties. I succesfully retuned the TV at digital switchover but I find that the picture on a number of channels keeps breaking up and at times there is no singnal for any of the channels.

Any suggestions what the problem could be?

n hobson: The answer depends on which transmitter the aerial faces and which channels are affected.

Refer to this page and identify which groups (multiplexes) are affected:

DTG :: DTT Services by Multiplex

There are six and each uses a signal of its own: PSB1, PSB2, PSB3(HD), COM4, COM5, COM6.

Some possibilities:
- If your aerial faces the Whitby relay which is on the industrial estate off A171 Stainsacre Lane then be aware that it only carries PSB channels. The aerial will be vertical. So if the COM channels are poor, then these must be being picked up from elsewhere. As the aerial was installed for reception from the Whitby transmitter, then isn't meant for receiving from elsewhere and therefore poor or intermittent reception may ensue; basically, you're on your own!

- If the aerial points to Bilsdale, it will be horizontal. If the PSB channels are poor, then perhaps it has tuned to the Whitby relay for them instead and it is this which needs correcting. The way to avoid Whitby transmitter is to have the aerial unplugged for the last 50% of the scan.

If you say which channels it is that you are having difficulty with and which transmitter the aerial faces, then a more exact answer can be provided.

n hobson: Just to add to that already said by Dave Lindsay, have you checked with any of your neighbours to find out if they are having any problems, as by them using the same aerial system as yourself it would save a wealth of explanations as to the possible causes of your problem if they are also experiencing reception difficulties, although should they not be, then what Dave Lindsay has said regarding tuning applies.

Also, with this type of query you should really have provided info on your location (post code or one from nearby) as reception in Whitby (myself being extremely acquaint with) varies quite considerably between both sides of the water, especially anywhere near to the Marina areas that is tucked in under the direct line of the signal from Whitby's relay, and of course well under any signals that might possibly be received from Bilsdale the full service transmitter.

We have a standard roof aerial that was installed 12 months ago.

Since changeover we have experienced intermittent interference, in particular on BBC1.

The interference can be lack of sinc to loss of signal for several seconds.

Any ideas ?

Malcolm Stuart: Have you checked that it is tuned to the correct UHF channel for the transmitter to which the aerial faces? This information is usually given on the signal strength screen.

Whitby's is C55 and Aislaby's is C45. If your aerial points to one, it could be picking up the other off the back of the aerial.

If this is the problem and your aerial faces the Whitby transmitter and it is tuned to Aislaby, then run the automatic tuning scan with the aerial unplugged up to about 52%.
