steve P: Or perhaps it has something to do with medium wave transmitters being relatively expensive to operate compared to the low numbers of people listening to them. All BBC local radio stations are available on Freeview and online so there are other ways to listen as an alternative DAB and FM (particularly if you are listen to a station outside of its coverage area).

Frankly I don't give a gone with the wind about BBC Local Radio to which I have never intentionally listened. I just know that MW tends to get to parts FM cannot reach and the rest are not available on a cheap tranny/car radio which is what the public mostly uses.

Are MW transmitters expensive to run? I can't see why modestly powered ones would be these days. We're not talking about 198Hz and metre wide glass globes no longer manufactured.
