Freeview reception - all about aerials | Installing

We are due to switch over to digital in August this year (postcode S11 7PD). Our aerial is adequate for current analogue (although a bit dodgy on windy days!). We could probably do with upgrading the aerial anyway, but would like to know if it is possible to change the aerial without changing the cable from the roof. This is because the cable enters the house at the roof of a single storey extension and runs all the way down an internal wall to the living room.
As we are planning to move house very soon, and the room has recently been redecorated,we need the simplest possible option.
At the moment we aren't able to get any digital channels using a set-top box (though only a cheapy box!). Is this likely to improve when the analogue signal is turned off, or will we have to bite the bullet and overhaul what we've got completely?

Mike: Thanks for the advice. Currently we don't get Channel 5 at all through the main aerial (we get a snowy Channel 5 on the portable TVs). I will look into getting a partial replacement if that's possible even if it's not the best option. I'm sure whoever moves in will want to overhaul the lot, but that can be with their choice of system.

I live in Sheffield and we have had no problems with DSO on 10th and 24th August. I was not expecting any other changes, except for a retune on 24th September (not sure what that is for though).

However, our local news mentioned a DSO for Yorkshire last night which I hadn't heard about and didn't think would affect us. This morning I found no change to the BBCA mux on our main telly (roof aerial, humax PVR), but our bedroom telly (portable with 'loop' aerial, cheapy Philips STB) has lost the BBC channels on the beginning of the channel list, and I have since found them in the '800's part of the list, which did not work yesterday.

What does this mean? Should I start using the '800's on the main telly (I had deleted them from the channel list as they had seemed to be defunct)? Will this all change again when we're supposed to retune on 24th Sept?

Sheffield (Sheffield, England) Full Freeview transmitter

Thanks Briantist. My postcode is S11 7PD. I know the roof aerial is pointed at the Crosspool (relay??) transmitter. I have no idea where the portable aerial is aimed at as I don't know anything about how the little ring aerials receive signals - if I turn it a different way will it pick up from a different transmitter?

Thanks KB.
It was you that fitted our new aerial back in May, and I'm pretty sure you said it was pointed at Crosspool. The Freeview was pretty much unusable except for BBC channels as we were right on the the edge of the segment which was switched off due to Totley Rise problem, but as soon as switchover occurred we got good channels across the board.

One problem I did have was with ghosting of the analogue signal coming through on the digital channels, but finally sorted this out with an individually screened scart lead. I mention this as it took me a while to sort out what was causing it, so it might help anyone else who may have the same problem.

Don't know if this is classed as advertising, but the scart lead I got cost all of £6 from ATV and works much better. Don't need flashy gold plated singing and dancing thing, which wouldn't have made any difference anyway if it's not individually screened. It's just a shame that when you fork out £170 for a Humax they can't manage to put a decent scart in with it. (Although having said that, no-one else I know with a Humax has had the same ghosting problem).
