Freeview reception at DA13 9ND

For reliable and stable Freeview reception, you need an unobstructed path between the TV aerial on your roof and the digital TV transmitter. The map below shows the transmitters predicted to provide a signal at this location.

You can click on any transmitter symbol to show the coverage area as a green overlay on the map. Double click on a transmitter symbol to go to the transmitter information page.

You can also view the ten closest potential '4G-at-800' mobile phone masts within 1.5km of the selected location - these masts may be used for 4G-at-800 mobile broadband services from 2013-2015.

Hi jb38 , the Tv is a Technika 32-2000 and the signal quality says very good with a bar indicating around 80%. I have just been talking to a neighbour who also has just Freeview like us and they are receiving Oxford without any problems.
Thanks again for trying to help.

Fran

Fran Shuttlewood : In that case, then your TV "not" being able to store a channel even although its being received at a good strength does give suspicions as to a possible fault in your TV's tuner, as about the only two things that can cause non- storage of a channel are: (1) the signal level of the channels attempted to be stored is too low, or : (2) that tuners memory is full to capacity (overloaded) whereby any attempt to store further channels is rejected, the way of overcoming this particular problem being to carry out a manufacturers reset, but of course, as you have already carried this out then this aspect does not obviously apply.

By the way, do you have a booster connected into your aerial system? my reason for asking being that the signal reading given is somewhat higher than would have been expected at 27 miles away from the Oxford transmitter, and if you do have a booster in line then the possibility exists that input circuitry on this device is being affected by the signal from the Woodford Halse transmitter located at a proverbial stones throw away from you, i.e: on the right hand side of the entrance to the Manor Business Park, checks made revealing that this transmitter is beaming the signal directly towards you.

Fran Shuttlewood : In addition to that said. Taking into account the fact that you have already tried a number of tests and yet the situation remains the same, then about the only options available to you (cost free!) are either to test your aerial out using another TV, or try tuning your TV whilst its temporarily connected into another aerial system, possibly an obliging neighbours?

Hi jb38, thanks again for your persistence. Yes we do have a booster. We thought this may have died but a kind gent at Maplins tested it for us and it is fine. Our next plan is to test with another tv. However this will be in about a week as our spare is on our narrowboat which is somewhere in Oxford with our son and his family. Im a bit dubious about hooking up to a neighbours aerial in case I obliterate their ability to connect to Oxford!!

Fran Shuttlewood: With regards to your concern about the possibility of affecting your neighbours ability to receive Freeview from Oxford, as an engineer, I can assure you that there is absolutely nothing to worry about as its impossible for you to do anything that would affect it in any way whatsoever.

However, I will look out for any further updates once you have managed to carry either of the two test options mentioned

Fran Shuttlewood : Just another couple of points that you could possibly try / check out in the meantime.

Although having reset your TV followed by attempting to store Oxfords 53 (BBC) or ITV (60) using the manual tune procedure had failed, as you will no doubt have carried out an auto-tune since then check to make sure that Oxfords BBC / ITV are not stored up in the 800 range of channels,

If by any chance a BBC / ITV programme channel is listed, select one of and carry out a signal check on it, this not so much being for the strength / quality of the signal, and which I believe "might" be combined in one bar on your set?, but more to check the Mux channel number seen indicated along with it, which if BBC could be : 25 (Woodford) - 53 (Oxford) or possibly 43 (Sutton Coldfield)

Secondly, if the aforementioned does not bring any results, should the booster referred to be situated anywhere close to the TV, remove the connector going into its input and connect it directly into the TV, this then followed by (unfortunately once again) resetting the TV and carrying out another manual tune / attempt to store / Oxfords Mux 53.

My reason for the latter check is simply because the booster will be amplifying the signal from Woodford Halse as well as the one from Oxford, but by Woodford H being so close its signal being amplified could possibly have the effect of desensitizing the tuner in your set as well as causing other problems, tuners used in Technika's not necessarily the best for stability.

John Martin: jb38: Sorry for not replying sooner, but I just didn't think to read the website until now.

Anyway continuing the conversation: The engineer came on the Monday and he managed to sort out the television reception. Both our two television are connected to one aerial and it has a signal splitter on the aerial, unfortunately this was on it's last legs and would have died if we left it much longer, meaning no television at all. Anyway one new signal splitter and a retune later and problem sorted. Everything's back to normal now.

John Martin: Perfectly understandable! but many thanks for the update on the outcome of the engineers visit, insomuch that the problem was tracked down as being caused by a defective aerial splitter, site visits armed with the necessary equipment always being a far quicker way of determining the cause of a problem, no matter of what nature it might be!

Richard Chambers: The Samsung has a decent tuner, and what the 800 numbers are 'extra' channels picked up by the TV - so if you have BBC1, then 805 might be BBC1 as well, but for a different transmitter. This can be a pain - I've got four BBC1's on my Sony recorder (the tuner is really sensitive), pulled in from my main transmitter, plus 3 others. Unfortunately, the other three are just powerful enough to confuse the recorder, but not enough signal to actually record anything. In your case, I'd start by checking your tuned to Redruth, because that should be the BBC1 on channel 1 transmitter. If not , start with this page I get signals from two Freeview transmitters, but I don't have the BBC and I | Help!
