Freeview reception at BT4 1JX

For reliable and stable Freeview reception, you need an unobstructed path between the TV aerial on your roof and the digital TV transmitter. The map below shows the transmitters predicted to provide a signal at this location.

You can click on any transmitter symbol to show the coverage area as a green overlay on the map. Double click on a transmitter symbol to go to the transmitter information page.

You can also view the ten closest potential '4G-at-800' mobile phone masts within 1.5km of the selected location - these masts may be used for 4G-at-800 mobile broadband services from 2013-2015.

During "Doctors" today on BBC1 at lunchtime we had a screen pop up three times.

The pop up consisted of a central red spot at the top with an "R" against. All sorts of numbers & words around the four edges. Each time I got the camera ready it disappeared. We are on the Sutton Coldfield transmitter.

Has anyone any idea what caused this?

Anyone else in the Chelmsford / Great Baddow area having issues with their Freeview?

About two hours ago it all went off, the whole block did.

Transmitters are showing as ok no problems and even contacted the local housing controllers CHP who said
they wasn't carrying out any work and it will take them 5 days to even bother sending someone out.

There are two ways to feed more than one TV set from a single aerial. The best is to use a powered splitter, but that rather sounds to be problematic due to lack of available power unless two neighbours agreed to share a single aerial and powered splitter. The other less satisfactory method is to use and unpowered splitter. These have two major problems: there is a significant signal loss between the input and the two outputs that could be enough to render recpetion problematic; the second is that if one TV were to be unplugged then the other TV fed from that splitter may well get a much poorer quality signal as the impedance matching is lost (aerials are designed to operate with a 75 Ohm 'load' and taking one TV out would mean the aerial is 'seeing a load of 37.5 Ohms so is mismatched and will not work properly). If, however, you could between all the residents guarantee that all the TVs will remain connected to the aerial systems then it might be worth trying. One factor we can't answer is whether there is enough signal strength to use a passive splitter. We would need to have a measurement of the actual strength at the aerial, but at Peasedown St John you may have sufficient as you are not that far from the transmitter at Mendip. I'd suggest that at least two of you consider sharing the costs of setting up a single aerial with a passive splitter - that's the only way to check whether it will work - but there are no guarantees that it will.

Lisa Simmons: You could be pushing it to receive it.

If you have manual tuning then use it. Go to the manual tune screen and enter/select UHF channel 56. Don't press the button to scan/add services immediately, rather wait and see if it gives any indication as to strength and quality.

Thanks, MikeP.

My thoughts were to try something like a Log36 aerial with a two-way unpowered splitter. Not having to route through the loft where the existing distribution amp is installed would also reduce the estimated 30-metre cable runs to about 20 metres.

After many years of receiving all channels OK, Freeview has vanished and re-tuning doesn't resolve it. I can get BBC, ITV and channel 5 and all their derivatives (V & radio) but absolutely no Freeview TV or radio channels. The aerial is fairly new and undamaged and cabling is OK and the BBC - ITV reception is excellent.
Any ideas to rectify please?
Len

John H Williams: That's an easy answer: never.

If you want more channels, there is a service for you, it's called Freesat. See Compare all free TV channels in the UK to see the channels in a comparison.

Freesat is specifically designed to bring more TV to the places that Freeview cannot reach.
