'Cynical' Virgin Media signed my mum up to Sky Sports package

I believe my 86-year-old mother has been the victim of a cynical Virgin Media saleswoman who who in 2018 convinced her to take out a Sky Sports package. Virgin Media insists that it will not refund the 400-plus that I estimate she has overpaid, as my mother had failed to cancel the package within the cooling-off period, and it is more than 12 months since it began. - www.theguardian.com

BBC: TV licence decriminalisation consultation opens

Culture Secretary Nicky Morgan is to launch a public consultation on whether failure to pay the TV licence fee should no longer be a criminal offence. There were around 26 million TV licences being used in the UK last year, generating 3.69bn in income for the BBC. If decriminalisation of the TV licence fee were to go through, it would have a considerable impact on BBC funding. - www.bbc.co.uk

Martin Campbell: The BBC must brace itself for big changes – RadioToday

Endless reports into where the BBC can make cuts, which have probably cost a small fortune alone, skip merrily over the areas that need real attention such as the monolithic management structure, over-manning in specific areas, transport costs and salaries for talent that help tighten the financial screw week by week. The BBC structure is not fit for purpose in 2020 but cutting bits out and turning bits around will only aid the crumbling. - radiotoday.co.uk

Tony Hall gave BBC stability but failed to see digital crisis ahead

When Tony Hall was appointed director general in 2013, he was given the task of steadying a BBC that had been seriously rocked by its handling of the Jimmy Savile and Lord McAlpine scandals. Unflappable in a crisis and with a strong track record as a journalist, Hall is popular among the BBC news team. - www.theguardian.com

Four big issues the new BBC director general will find in their in-tray

Whoever replaces Tony Hall as director general of the BBC will have to hit the ground running as the corporation braces for another fight with the government over licence fee funding, the still-unfolding scandal over unequal pay and the exodus of young viewers in the Netflix-era of streaming TV. 1. The issue is particularly acute among younger audiences, with the BBC admitting that under-24-year-olds spend more time on Netflix in a week than all of BBC TV, including iPlayer, despite the latter's relative popularity with younger viewers. - www.theguardian.com
