A FIRE at a Bilsdale TV mast has left up to a million people without TV and radio signal - but users are desperately to know when signals will return. The mast is primarily used for radio and television transmission and is among the most powerful in the UK. In a more recent statement, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said the fire had been extinguished but a 300-metre exclusion zone remains around the mast. - www.thenorthernecho.co.uk

BBC pulls local morning TV bulletins as 'pingdemic' leads to staff shortages

From Monday, BBC One's Breakfast programme will no longer have local news bulletins covering English regions, while further regional programmes might be at risk if staff need to self-isolate amid rising cases of Covid-19.The broadcaster said it hoped to be able to restart morning local news bulletins from September. The crisis has left managers feeling that they had to sacrifice some of the BBC's local television news output to allow staff to focus on the early evening news bulletins for their region. - www.theguardian.com

The BBC faces major challenges from the government to its independence

According to the FT, Sir Robbie Gibb, a long-time BBC producer who left the corporation to become Theresa May's head of communications in No 10, and has more recently joined the BBC board of directors, warned Fran Unsworth, the head of news at the BBC, about the appointment of a journalist he deemed hostile to the government. In fact the well-trodden path from the BBC to Conservative party is far more marked than the traffic between the Labour party and the BBC. Three consecutive Conservative prime ministers have drawn their communications advice from former BBC staffers just as Sir Robbie Gibb served Theresa May, David Cameron's former head of communications Sir Craig Oliver was once controller of BBC News's English-language global services, and Boris Johnson's recent press secretary Allegra Stratton was a former political editor of Newsnight. - www.theguardian.com

Channel 4 chair criticises government's 'harmful' privatisation plan

In a potential blow to the independent television production companies that currently make all of the broadcaster's output, ministers have set out that Channel 4 could be allowed to make its own programmes if it was privatised. ASA Ruling on Hutchison 3G UK Ltd t/a Three

It was the only UK mobile network that could provide a full 5G service in accordance with international technical standards which would inevitably make Three's network significantly faster than their competitors. Three said their data centres, which hosted the network which processed their data, were distributed around the UK which brought the network closer to customers and reduced latency and allowed for some local content storage which supported delivery of a faster service. - www.asa.org.uk

Netflix to court older viewers as flow of young fans slows down

Netflix is set to report the smallest growth in subscribers in a decade next week, as the flow of young fans who have fuelled its meteoric rise slows down, leading it to target tech-wary over-55s.The streaming giant expects to have added just 1 million new subscribers globally when it reports its second quarter results on Tuesday, the lowest number of new signups since 2011, when the business suffered the growing pains of splitting its DVD-by-post and streaming operations. It is no surprise that as Netflix has grown older - the former upstart launched its streaming service 14 years ago - it is experiencing demographic and geographic change as it looks to new regions such as Asia and Latin America as well as older users in mature markets. - www.theguardian.com

Filey TV Signal: Residents entitled to free TV fix during mobile network upgrade

Interference could include intermittent sound, 'blocky' or pixellated images, or loss of TV signal, as some of the frequencies now used for mobile services were previously used for free to view TV. If viewers do experience interference caused by mobile network upgrades, free support is available from Restore TV - an independent programme that resolves TV interference caused by the upgrade of mobile signals. Residents are more likely to be affected if they live in an area with weak digital television reception, have a TV signal booster and whose TV aerial is close to a mobile mast. - www.thescarboroughnews.co.uk
