John Proctor: Happy New Year.
If I were you, I would certainly get a variable attentuator to try.
I am 25 miles from Emley Moor with clear line of sight at rooftop level. With my loft aerial pointing in the right direction the PSBs come in stronger than the COMs. Moving it 15 or 20 degrees off, the PSBs are still very strong but the COMs' strength falls off.
If what you describe is that when the aerial is pointing in the correct direction you loose the BBC channels, then I am thinking, as jb38 describes, that you are giving it too much signal.
The multiplexes from Emley Moor are:
PSB1=BBCA (BBC1 etc) Ch47
PSB2=D3&4 (ITV1 etc) Ch44
PSB3=BBCB (HD services) Ch41
COM4=SDN (ITV3 etc) Ch51
COM5=ArqA (Pick TV etc) Ch52
COM6=ArqB (Yesterday etc) Ch48

Variable attenuator ordered as a result of advice.
In the meantime will try the reverse direction suggestion, if only because I'm curious.

Hi
I bought a Sagecom RT190 T2 HD freeview recorder for my Mum for Xmas and installed it for her on the 28th Dec. It worked OK until the 1st Jan but now the image is pixillating and the signal strengh keeps varying btween high and low. Connecting the roof top ariel back to the freeview receiver in her LG TV gives a normal picture so the problem seems to be the new box. We did a reset which worked for a few hours although we lost the HD channels (BBC, ITV-1). In the morning the problem was the same with the images pixillating. Has anyone got any ideas on what i can do? Her post code is WF2 6DY and i think the transmitter is Emley Moor.
many thanks
Martin

Martin Jakubowski: At 7.6 miles from the transmitter, with clear line of sight, it could be that the signal level is too high.
See this page for more information:

Get a variable attenuator and connect it between the aerial and the input of the Sagecom box.

thanks for the advice I will try this and post the result to let you all know how I get on.
I am still puzzled as to why the box would have worked OK for a few days though and then start to fail. Is there an explanation for this?

Martin Jakubowski: The signal level could have changed slightly (increased); a change in atmospherics for example.

I live in Ilkley and we live near the Emley moor signal thingy but we cant get any channels the majority of the time except bbc channels we have tried retuning and buying a new cable we dont have a box or anything they seem to work when the weather is good but as soon as it starts raining or the wind picks up we lose them and they don't come back on for days we literally get all the channels about once or twice a week if we are lucky does anybody know why this happens as it's a bit of a joke really what's the point in having loads of channels that you can't actually watch

Becca: Without knowing your exact location, it's very difficult to be exact. However, it's fair to say that in your general area, reception of Emley Moor will be difficult if not impossible in the bottom of Wharfedale.
For this reason it has it own transmitter signal thingy what der yer ma call it. It's ont' 'ill above Otley.
If your aerial is vertical (elements up and down), then it is probably on the Wharfedale transmitter and is definately not on Emley Moor. Unfortunately Wharfedale is a "Freeview Light" transmitter which means that it only broadcasts the Public Service Broadcaster (PSB) services which are BBC, ITV1, ITV2, C4, E4, More4, C5, HD channels and a few others.
Should your aerial be directed at Wharfedale and you have other channels tuned in like ITV3, Pick TV, Yesterday and Dave, then these aren't coming from Wharfedale, which is probably why reception is touch and go.

Becca: If you post your location (preferably post code) we can get an idea of what the likelihood of reception is.

Now have an attenuator as suggested. Tried to ensure the aerial is aimed at Emley.
Most channels now available, although some simply not registering.
Variable strengths indicated for channels as well as variable results, i.e. occasional pixelation on strong channels, none on some weaker ones, and poor reception on ITV4 and Film 4 (Com 6 ?)
Advice appreciated still, although imminent minor surgery indicates I may not be able to crawl around in the loft for a week, or so to possibly deal with the aerial. On the other hand, could adjust the attenuator as that is more convenient.
