John: There was no requirement to retune as the frequencies used for services from Hannington have not changed.

There were two possibilities:

1. If your unit was tuned correctly, then retuning won't help because issues with reception lie elsewhere. This will provide no benefit but there is the potential to make matters worse because your receiver could tune to the wrong transmitter.

2. If your unit was not tuned correctly, then retuning was necessary since the time it was last tuned (incorrectly). In this case, you were tuned to a signal from a direction (transmitter) to which your aerial does not face, thus picture reception issues are to be expected.

If your aerial points to Hannington, then do a full scan with the aerial unplugged. When it gets to 33% plug it in. This will mean that the aerial is unplugged whilst scanning the frequency used by Crystal Palace which carries London services, but plugged in for Hannington.

Once you have done this, you can verify that your receiver is tuned correctly by checking the UHF channels it is tuned to for the following services:

BBC One Ch50
BBC Four Ch46
ITV1 Ch43
ITV3 Ch40
Pick TV Ch44
Yesterday Ch41

This information is usually given on the signal strength/quality screen. It may be described as "Channel", "Ch", "UHF channel" or some variation thereof.

Once you have established that these channels are correct, then there is no need to retune until 8th February. If you have issues, then it is not the tuning that is at fault.

In the last couple of months we have bought a new LG TV with HD Freeview and Humax HD Freeview PVR ready for switchover. Everything was working fine until a few of days ago. First no ITV then ITV came back & no BBC channels. Occasionally we have no channels. At the moment we have had no BBC for 2 days. We live nearer to Rowridge transmitter but have to get out TV from Hannington. We are pensioners with no technical knowledge. All the above advice seems double dutch. If anything needs re-setting up, we will have to pay someone to do it for us. Who do we contact eg aerial company or what?
